Links on planets

Is there a reason my ice links are taking up around 10x as much grid as my other planets? Theyre the same length and upgrade level but my storm link takes 57 grid at upgrade level 3 and my ice one takes up 791 . . .

By design or my stupidity?

My first guess would be that the planet radius is very much bigger on the ice planet. As such, whilst the links may look the same length on the display (ie. a few pixels), on the ground that translates to many thousands more miles.

well, the pins are as close together as I can make them, so while that may be the case, i cant imagine that im blind enough to make a 10x mistake

The pins might be as close together as you can make them but what are the relative planet radius?

If you can put pins 5 pixels apart, what do those 5 pixels represent? The length they represent is going to be determined by the planet radius.

Thats interesting, so youre telling me that for some reason the pins scale with the planet? because the length between the pins is the same size relative to the pins themselves . . .

Shouldnt I just be able to zoom in farther?

Whilst it's been yonks since I actually did any PI, hence this being my first guess, yes - this is definitely how it worked when I last tinkered. And yes, it's a bit bonkers, and yes you should be able to zoom in, and no there is no reason why builders on large planets should consider "adjacent" to mean 50 miles away but they do.

Check the radius of your planets (the show info panel has it), if you see a corellation between link cost of apparently adjacent nodes and the planet radius then there's your answer (I'd hazard a guess that the exact scaling be tied to 2π r).

The upcoming patch/expansion, if I recall correctly, has a rather large buff to link capacity which should minimise some of these issues.

yeah i checked as of my last post and did the math . . . youre completely right, I just couldnt fathom something so stupid . . .

And that's why you're not cut out for a job at CCP Big smile

(fake edit: sorry CCP, little harsh there but couldn't pass up the opportunity - "unintended side effect the correction of which gets pushed down to the to-do list" is perhaps fairer, but that wouldn't scan as well)

lol well I guess it is understandable because the UI has a max zoom level, but it should probably be fixed . . . no wonder why all my gas planets have sucked . . .

I didn't notice this on Ice, but Gas links cost A LOT.
