Would you pay for an Expansion?

If there was real content in the expansion I might be tempted, but for those slightly-larger-than-patches things that are called "expansion" now I wouldn't pay more than I already do with my subscription.
And as others have said before, anything that creates a rift between the players that paid and those that don't is Teh Bad.

Imagine this error message:
"Sorry, you cannot jump through this gate after the ship you had tackled since you haven't got the 'Go To Jove' expansion. Sucks to be you."

nope, and especially not for expansions which reflect a consolidation phase of eve development. if they want to keep the tradition of calling these updates expansions and marketing them as such I don't really care as I don't pay for them, but it's obvious to me that interim patches do pretty much the same thing but to a lesser extent, such as rolling out GUI changes and ship balancing etc.

forums.  serious business.

I don't see why CCP can't do what Chris Roberts is doing. Seems to work for him.

Given the vast amounts of money they wasted on Incarna, where we got a room and melted video cards. Would you honestly trust them not to just blow the money a second time?

As to would I pay for expansions: No, not with what they have called an expansion for the last 2 years.

To be fair, with Incarna, they had to create the system from the ground, up. Theoretically, the most difficult part of WiS was the actual 'Walking' part. Everything after that should just be creating new spaces which, as more resource blocks are created and can be reused, will become cheaper. After that, the primary cost will be creating the content and events, which (theoretically) shouldn't be nearly as expensive.

Unfortunately, we are talking about CCP here, so I wouldn't hold to any theories about how things should have been done as being remotely accurate.

Bear with me while I bring up the dreaded "WoW" word. Every 24 months more or less, they release an expansion which costs money. It has content: usually new zones, new PvE, new playable races or classes, etc. In the interim they release patches, big and small. Some patches are as big as EVE "expansions" and put in new content and class rebalancing.

I would pay for an EVE expansion that was as substantial as a World of Warcraft expansion. I would pay upwards of $50-$60 for new constellations to explore and conquer, new missions to run, new complexes and escalations, etc. Currently, EVE's expansions are just large, twice-yearly patches.

I wouldn't pay for an expansion, but I wouldn't be opposed to having some kind of crowdfunding platform for things like new server nodes.

I think this is the biggest problem. Everyone knows what to expect from a WoW expansion: more zones, more mobs, more raids, more items. That is what all of the WoW community wants from an expansion. However the EVE playerbase is so varied - from highsec miners to mission runners to explorers to lowsec pirates to wormhole dwellers and nullsec empires - that making an expansion of content that would please everybody would take years of developer time. And if you cater only to one group, everybody else will rightfully refuse to pay for what is to them an useless feature.

I don't give a damn about new regions, new missions, new NPCs. On the other hand I would pay money for an expansion focusing on revamping the sov system, better corporation and alliance management tools, ship balance, etc - which you probably wouldn't even call "content". That doesn't mean that my opinion is right and yours is wrong - we are both just looking for different things in the game.

A WoW expansion will last about a month at best. The last few EVE expansions have produced more pvp content than the ground pounders in WoW can dream for.

Would I pay for an expansion?
No.

....

Would I pay for an eve expansion?

No.

Eve is not a game where you can really exclude pieces of content from a player because they don't have a expansion.

For instance....

You cannot enter wormhole space because you did not buy the wormhole expansion.

Now would you buy the expansion to experience wormhole space??????

CCP's expansions aren't expansions, there enhancements. There built to improve the experience of the entire game for the entire community, without restrictions.

Most expansions of other games are merely moneygrabs. We've added in 10 levels.. If you want to continue endgame content, give us 40 dollars.

The issues you run into is power creep, cause now all the old equipment is useless, those who bought the expansion are 10x more powerful, and your setting barriers for people who want to enjoy a game without doing a micro transaction every 3 months.

In addition, the moment a game developer releases an expansion that is deemed garbage by the community, you lose virtually the entire community. They've paid for garbage, got garbage, and would rather leave than pay money for another piece of expansion garbage

Now CCP has released some crappy expansion. If they charged people for it , they would have gone out of business due to subscription loss.

Yaay!!!!

no, i supported this game on and off for a few years because of the structure and integrity this game has even with the t20. EA ideas and ethoses(even a word?) should stay at EA imo.

edit ie don't try and mend whats not broken.

There have been a few actual expansions but mostly we see just revamps..
I think CCP needs to come out with an real expansion that opens up new parts of space. adds a new class of ship.
And a new types of PVE/PVP content..

and would you be willing to Pay for an Expansion? Give feed back and vote.

The real question is, do you honestly believe CCP will take your money and give you an actual expansion? Lol

The greatest flaw is OPs survey is that he/she believes that forums warriors represent an accurate cross-section of Eve players.

But you presume to know what they would vote. It could be completely in the other direction and they could all want a full on expansion.

Why would I pay for something that's been free for so long?

Incarna as a "daughter" game is probably the best way forward at this point. Make it optional, give it a funding source that doesn't cut into EVE development money, see how popular it really it. I'd kick in a few quid on the off chance.
