Every bit of it is true if you approach skyrim in the same fashion as previous RPG's. If you set out with your only goal to have fun, enjoy every bit of the game as it comes, and most importantly, roleplay, all of these magically vanish.

Skyrim isn't about dragons or anything as simple as that.

Skyrim is about getting lost; you have a goal and within 3 paces or moving into its direction there's a "oooh shiny, gotta do that first" which can be anything from a new quest, something just very awesome, entertaining or actually rather dull but cool anyway. You're doing some quest line and all of a sudden you realise you took a left turn somewhere, story wise, and got sidetracked... again... 2 hours ago.

It's glorious.

This. I was walking to a location just outside the first major city (the name of which I forgot) whenI saw a dragon, and ended up being a LONG way away from my objective after killing the dragon, getting ore from a mine, and clearing said mine of bandits. And somehow, I didn't feel like I wasted time at all.

King: You "hopped on up" into the Abyssal Palace?

Me: Yeeeep, yep yep yep. Just squat-jumped on in there and looted the place. Then I killed that Sydney guy-
King: Synraith, Demon Prince of the Abyss.

Me: -yeah him. I ganked that guy. Mostly just to see if I could. Plus he looked like kind of a ****.

King: Indeed, the Foulest of the Foul was "kind of a ****." But you vanquished him without the aid of sacred Fjalnir, the God-axe?

lol best lines...

Or you could do none of those things, because you're currently playing Skyrim until your eyes bleed, stopping only to read more about Skyrim before returning to Skyrim.

Indeed! The game should never hold you back. For instance, I bought the home in Whiterun and there is a nifty bookshelf which you can activate and store your books on, which I thought was an awesome feature. But then I realized how many books I actually keep and there is only 1 bookshelf in my house :( So I began the tedious task of book stacking.

Also began to stack my metal ingots ... http://i40.tinypic.com/ncobax.jpg

I spend more time in Whiterun organizing and selling my loot than I ever do actually adventuring.......and at this point I have enough gold to buy ANYTHING I ever want........but I. Cant. Stop. =(

I even still save before finishing a given quest to check what other way I can end it to compare the rewards and pick the one that makes me the most gold....

Really does bring out massive personality flaws

But enough talk, I got pockets to pick and shops to rob in the dead of night

Have to admit, the most epic thing I remember doing recently was simply walking along the road minding my own business and getting into an argument with a few Justicars...

Which ended with me dispatching a high elf she dog with her hunched over and my sword through her gut.

I love the first person critical animations Twisted

It was a bit funny when I tried retrieving the tablet before going to whiterun.

"Oh hey we need you to get the dragon tablet from bleak falls barrow"

"Sure thing, oh wait you mean this tablet I picked up while casually slaughtering Draugir because someone got his golden claw stolen and wanted me to get it back?"

"Yeah that's the one, hey you're really a cut above the typical brutes the Jarl gets."

"Oh hey a dragon, you should go fight it even though we literally met you only 5 minutes ago."

"No problem, but how did you dipatch the troops in less than a minute? Dunmer must be fast runners."

That instance is kind of avoidable if you prioritize the defense of a village over getting the claw back though.

Yeah and if you do it that way, which I did fwiw, you miss the meeting with the 'mysterious' stranger in the wizard's boudoir.

This terrible habit -- of scouting out every single other pathway before the main one -- may be a leftover impulse from older RPGs, where many areas became inaccessible after you advanced through them. So if you wanted to make sure you found all the secret spells and legendary weapons, you had to explore every other path before the right one, otherwise the story might drag you, kicking and screaming, away from the best toys. That's no longer the case with modern games. Most let you visit and revisit any area at any point, but it's too late for me: The behavior is learned, and the damage is done.

This. thisthisthisthisTHIS.

and... I dislike it when map- and level-designers give you a choice of two paths, and the one all signs point towards being the 'way forward' is a dead end... because I always instinctively choose the *other* path in fear of losing loot.
this was particularly annoying once when entering a room caused some javelins to sprout from the ground barring the door... forcing me to go forward. and then after I'd finished the dungeon I had to go around the whole thing again and all I got from that particular dead end was 7 gold.

this is usually not a problem with Skyrim though... but it HAS been a problem in a LOT of other games.. one particular game comes to mind: Red Faction Armageddon. where you got a 'YOU MUST RETURN TO THE ACTIVE GAMING AREA IN 10 SECONDS!' if you tried to explore a place you'd just been in a few seconds ago, but because you walked over an invisible boundary the story has now progressed to the next area. :P

I digress.

lol, i couldnt agree more... The trouble im having with this game is its forceing me to progress when i dont really want to as you say. I like to RP a bit in these games and to find that a quest im doing sends me to Winterhold to speak to an NPC about somthing, then on my way in there i get enrolled in the mage guilds quests is pretty annoying by all accounts...

The game started off ok but where i am now i keep getting sent places left right and center and im being started on quests i have no interest in at that moment in time :s.

Personally, I get annoyed by the lack of a time limit on quests. If X is in immediate danger, I feel compelled to immediately finish the quest instead of wandering around for a few months of game time. It just breaks the immersion to know that no matter how long I dilly dally around, the NPC (and his assassins) will still be waiting for me to "rush" to the rescue, or that I have all year to save the planet from being destroyed by the Orb o' Doom.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.
