Who inside CCP is getting kick backs from Somer to look the other way? Is there anything actually illegal going on that is against international, or Icelandic law? If it was an individual inside CCP getting paid then laws may have been broken.

If anything this crooked did happen then it happened off the books I'm sure.

Situations like this are usually a 'don't ask, don't tell' scenario.

ie. someone noticed this was RMT when SOMER started doing it, they asked about it in a meeting, their superiors said they'll look into it, they looked into it and saw a cash cow and the subject became taboo.

Not today spaghetti.

my last post got looked over on the bottom of the last page ftl so i'll say it again here

i've heard whispers that CCP Navigator was previously a Somer employee

I would be very very careful about spreading rumours about CCP staff, as it is against the EULA.

In any case, Navigator has worked for CCP since before SomerBlink started. I remember exchanging slightly angry emails with him when he was in charge of forum moderating shortly after I started the game (c. 4 years ago). The topic, ironically, was CCP's failure to show sufficient respect and 'recognition' to the players and the disastrous consequences that can have for any community, especially ones that would count as 'authoritarian regimes' in a political sense. It was my very first experience of being deeply annoyed with CCP!

There are two types of EVE player:

those who believe there are two types of EVE player and those who do not.

i said i heard whispers about it, nothing more nothing less. it just happened to make sense as he apparently was the one to go give the stuffs to Somer. regarding EULA violations, those seem to be selectively enforced. however, as you seem to know more about it than i do, i'll go back and edit my posts to retract the statement.

well, it would help if CCP would come out and actually say something instead of remaining mostly silent for that last month...

Short of it being:
- Don't assume, look at the facts
- Facts are, RMTing has occurred, the perpetrator should be punished

You can completely disregard any conventional sense of the phrase "RMT" and look at the EULA. It stated that no one was to use Eve as a source of income, it very clearly stated you could not play Eve for your job.

Shattered crystal selling GTC's for all kinds of games and not having any in game affiliation is legal. Somer Blink having an in game affilliation with selling GTC's was completely against the EULA. I have not read the re wording of the entire EULA, but even if they changed it in Somers favor they still made 135K breaking the EULA. **** that, seriously. If people don't understand whats wrong with that, less power to them.

EDIT;

Turns out they didn't reword it and its STILL against the EULA.

Biggest thing here though is that the rule did not change and other people were banned over the same time period.

So while one or more people may have said or even written that there actions were ok, the rules were there for all to see saying it was a banable offense plus all the other nasty stuff.

This is a wholly different kettle of fish to my OP. I have no idea if there was a "legally" exploitable loophole, if people were banned for doing exactly the same as Somer, banned for doing similar things as Somer, or if everyone has been acting "illegally" forever etc. etc.

What I do know is that CCP, to all intents and purposes, endorsed Somer through a community spotlight, favours, iScorps and many many positive posts about them. This is not the behavior of a company who thinks Somer is breaking the rules and deserves to be punished. AFAIK, Somer did not hide the way they operate from CCP. CCP was fully aware of what they did and how they did it. CCP went ahead and essentially endorsed it. They even heaped praise upon it.

Those who are baying for Somer's blood are asking for CCP to ban Somer because, wait for it, CCP messed up. Hands up who wants to be praised by CCP for doing X but then banned the next day by CCP because you did X? Those baying for Somer's blood are truly blinkered (waheyyyy!) by their hatred for Somer.

That be the end for me unless someone from the "BAN SOMER ARGHHHH!" camp can post any sort of reasoned and rational justification as to why CCP should ban people because CCP mess up.

If CCP did explicitly ok Somer's business model then it would really be pretty grim of them to punish him for it now. But if they didn't and it was just overlooked ... At the same time, if CCP did explicitly allow Somer's business model then heads should genuinely roll as they have now made clear that this behaviour is inappropriate for everyone else.

Agreed. If Somer did this without CCP's approval there needs to be bans. If they did this with CCP's approval then someone over there should start looking for a new job.

Point taken. I personally would rather CCP wipe the slate, set the rules in stone and then ban anyone for for contravening them. As it is though, quite a lot of people are basically asking for CCP to pull the trigger on someone due to their own ineptitude / corruption / stupidity and that's just wrong.

In that case everyone should be allowed to RMT up to ~$130k before being told to stop.
All this started because Somer was being given special treatment, and now you want to give them even more? The EULA very clearly states that if you RMT you're out.

How is it still in doubt wether or not it's actually legal? CCP supported SOMER on two different occasions. I think it's pretty safe to say that CCP has okay'ed SOMER and their business plan.

Yet in this case theyre not getting endorsed and praised for doing X and banned for X, but theyre getting praised for X (being oh so benefitial to the community) and (maybe) banned for Y (RMT).
