IMPORTANT UPDATE: It seems that CCP have now officially banned this practice. See Katerina Reid's post here - https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3800889#post3800889

and corroboration from another gambilng site here:
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3802585#post3802585

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS RMT IN THIS THREAD OR IT WILL BE LOCKED FOR BREAKING FORUM RULES

or

http://themittani.com/features/more-135k-somer-finances-investigated

Hardly just website maintenance income eh? The figure of 135k is what the owner of Shattered Crystal states Somer earned from him up to May 2013. Monthly earnings since then can be expected to be considerably higher, since a) Somer seems to have moved to Markee Dragon in exchange for a bigger cut of the profit, and b) Somer has been receiving huge boosts from CCP in recent months.

The key info:

Quote:

Another thing that Mr. Hutchinson told me was how much SOMERblink made from affiliate fees. SOMERblink was an affiliate of Shattered Crystal from 29 September 2010 to 9 May 2013 and made approximately $135,000. From looking at the records during this time, Mr. Hutchinson told me that the referrals from SOMERblink accounted for approximately one-third of all of Shattered Crystals sales (not profit) across all products. That includes game time codes, other cash cards and even copies of games for games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2.

One of the things I like about this story is how eve-appropriate it is. It seems pretty clear that Shattered Crystal is pouring fuel on the current fire because they are pissed off about losing Somer's business (a third of their total referrals) to a higher bidder. This appears to be their payback for Somer's attempt to strongarm them. Metamarket pvp.

There are two types of EVE player:

those who believe there are two types of EVE player and those who do not.

Another piece of writing I would add to the discussion. It is a bit older but still relevant.

How about CCP's new stance on completely ignoring their playerbase.

Oh yea, they are to focused on trying to save their last failure. Know I see a devblog on it once a week...more than what we get.

We get locks.

If there's one thing the unwashed masses hate, it's the people who are more clever than they are.

Most of the people that post in this forum are an excellent example of this behavior.

I too am discouraged by CCP's patronage of one legitimate e-commerce business and it's blatantly anti-competitive stance regarding others trying to follow a similar business model. (source | source | source)

Reminds me of the saying "The British Army is always preparing for the last war." CCP had just finished mopping up T20 as Incarna ended, and now "greed is good" needs to be wiped out. I feel sorry for whatever poor sod has to deal with SOMERgate when it actually comes around to fixing the inherent flaws in our system.

They dont post because they feel like most threads they die and we get bored of it.

Or a lock flies in like a raging rabbit

This should have been dealt with sooner than later but its quite ironic all this kicked off whilst most off the CCP family were on holiday. It is very very strange.

Quoting "you will die" in EvE is fail Chars dont die in EvE. Unless you have a heart attack eek.

So much has changed in the last 2 years

We have communicated our intention here internally in very wide circles through the Virtual Economy Summit presentation at the GSM, our Fearless newsletter, sprint reviews, email lists and multiple other channels. This should not come as a surprise to anyone.

Currently we are seeing _very predictable feedback_ on what we are doing. Having the perspective of having done this for a decade, I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change.

We went out with a decisive strategy on pricing and we will stay the course and not flip flop around or knee jerk react to the predictable. That is not saying nothing will change, on the contrary, in fact we know that success in this space is through learning and adapting to _what is actually happening_ and new knowledge gained in addition to what we knew before and expected.

All that said, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished as a company, changing the world is hard and we are doing it as so many times before! Stay the course, we have done this many times before.

Oh wait no it hasn't it is the same crap as before except this time the CSM is siding with CCP.

I'm not sure this represents the whole player base.

All I can see if incredibly jealous people across the whole set of arguments.

1) Somer getting stuff to raffle off (the unique items argument was the only real issue in this whole lot of Pathetic mess.)
2) Somerblink people getting scorpions (like a whole load of other people who support the community)
3) Now somerblink makes a bit of cash providing a service to the community.

I tell you what if I was these people I would tell you all to pee off.

before this thread gets locked...
i was interested to people saying that somer credit was just numbers on a spreadsheet and not real isk.
I wonder if you all knew how fractional reserve banking worked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional_reserve_banking
basically the "money" in your account isn't real money but "bank credit".
because "bank credit" is a just a promose to pay real money if you ask for it this also allows private banks to create new currency whenever someone takes out a loan 9ie promises to pay them). This means that when you take out a loan they don't transfer money to your account from theirs or even from other savers but merely create new bank credit.
booms occur when huge amount of new currency is created (debt increases)
busts occur when currency is destroyed (defaults or debt paid off)
the choice between governments printing money to fund costs or paying private banks to print it for them is kinda odd.
allowing private banks to create and destroy currency to suit their own interests is also kinda odd.
maybe slightly more important than this somer rubbish with many similar arguments.
i will post this here too

Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85

"a bit of cash"...

His service would work perfectly fine without his giving credits(isk) for his referals. And it would remove this entire issue that we arent allowed to talk about.
