Repurposing ships

I think it'd be a pretty neat idea to impliment a mechanic whereas you can change the bonuses that ships get, within reason. Say I wanted to fly a Rohk, but I'm trained in mostly missiles. I could buy a specific set of modifications and instal them into the ship, changing the +10 bonus to large optimal turret range to, maybe, +10 large missile velocity, or damage, or cruise missiles, or ect.

Of course there would be limitations to what you can do. Reasonable limitations. No turning Kestrals into Cruise missile platforms (or maybe you can?).

The conversion system itself could be done in multiple ways. Perhaps using T2 parts, or rare materials. Perhaps using NPCs and factions; having the options in the LP stores. Give it a long "conversion timer", so that it's still rather limiting. Of course it should be very, very expensive. Sometimes perhaps more expensive than the hull itself, considering you are, in effect, ripping out the insides of what it was originally purposed for and installing all new systems and hardpoints. Some modifications could have negatives attached to them. Weakening of armor, or having to draw more powergrid, CPU, capacitor, cargo space, ect. in order to accommodate for the changes.

Perhaps even extend the LP option for changing the look of the ship; Caldari Navy LP stores have the option of repainting the ship to the Navy camo, ect.

The developers want Isk sinks, to balance out the multitude of ways there is to make isk. Here you go. Don't give us aesthetics for characters, give us aesthetics for our ships and more options for the things we like to fly. Hell, we spend the most time looking at our ships, yet we have no way to spruce them up.

Why don't you just fly a ship that gets the bonuses that you are after?

You could do this or you could fly a T3 and build your ship the way you want.

Bluntly, this kind of idea destroys ship balance. How do you determine what values for bonuses are acceptable? Are they equivalent to it's regular bonuses? Are you allotted different kinds of bonuses so you can't just turn a ship into an alpha machine more then what the game allows? And how do these ships interact with the market? 50 different kinds of Rokh would not only put a lot of stress on the game but the players in the market would have a horrible time deciding the value of things. Even if something like this was very expensive, that doesn't make it balanced. Quite the opposite in fact, it just makes it an exclusive privilege that caters to the space-rich or people quick to pull their credit cards out. That in of itself makes this a bad idea. Finally, custom skins have been mentioned many, many times and I'm not going to talk about them any further, you can search for those threads for conclusive arguments (as well as a fair amount of rage).

Unfortunately, a more limited scope of customization is required for both the sake of game balance and simple hardware limitations. I know the desire to build a ship from the ground up, and that's what T3's are for (and the tears around that topic are incredible).

But that wouldn't look like a Rokh...

Who would want to fly a ship that doesn't look like a Rokh? Shocked

Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

Fighting back is more fun than not.

The Rokh is the sexiest BS in existence...if only I'd trained Boom Boom instead of Whooshers...d'oh! I still like to fly it just because it is sexy.

It's called "rigs". Only the limitations are a bit stricter than what you propose (for a good reason).

Exactly.

The point is paying to fly a ship the way you want to fly it. Expand the versitality of fits ships instead of religating them to a couple of roles.

The balance issue is perhaps a problem, but it's not like these kinds of ships would be everywhere, conceivably. Pirate and Navy ships are seen, but not all that often. They're reserved for people who actually put in the work for it, either by scamming people, working for the ISK, or by earning the LP. There are all kinds of insanely expensive ships out there, and people still buy them. But that's exactly why it wouldn't put so big a strain on the game. They're not Tournament expensive, but they're not cheap.

I haven't hammered down any actual mechanics or anything, just an idea that came from wanting the Rokh to have more options for missiles.

Rigs are useful for altering a ship, but they don't have the ability to add missile hardpoints to a turret platform. Simple as that.

So what you actually saying is that you want body kits for EVE ships. Fly a Domi but make it look like a Rokh. I'll leave it up to CCP to determine whether to make them look as chavtastic as real car body kits almost inevitably do! Twisted

No.

This idea breaks balance and it would remove the fun in getting a ship to do a job it wasn't built for.
