That is a video of Nexus - Jupiter Incident gameplay.. The engine trails in this game are amazing. I think eve should take notice of these, and try and do something similiar.

Something like that would look really good with EVE me thinks.

I also hope we'll get engine trails during warp too, it's a bit jarring to go from engine trails, no engine trails and engine trails again... plus it would look extremely cool.

I'm thinking though that the trails we see now are very much WIP.

Engine trails are stupid, and I'm extremely glad you can turn them off in settings.

They look extremely unrealistic, verging on the point of cartoony.

I just checked out SiSi and I like the engine trails.

I would like to suggest that, along with some ideas already mentioned regarding the smoothness of them, they also need to be a little bit shorter.

Apart from that, great!

They are kinda flat. CCP thanks for bringing back ship trails (what took you so long, seriously.) What needs to be done in my opinion to these trails is a simple bit of distortion. Don't make them super clean, make them spread out a bit over time. Add little bits of exhaust flares to the trails occasionally and make the gas or whatever it is spread out after being pushed into space. I promise it'll look better.

Less flat shaded. Add volume!

edit: Also, I think I figured out what it is. The trails encompass the entire engine cone. Have them just come from the tip, and scale them down considerably.

Need stuff moved? Push Industries will handle it. Serving highsec, lowsec and nullsec - and we do it faster and more reliably than anyone else. Ingame channel: PUSHX

I also thought something was off about these and I figured it out...

They don't look like engine TRAILS they look like engine TAILS

When you swing the ship around the entire trail moves as if it were a bunch of ropes.

The trail shouldn't swing around it should show that a turn was made and dissipate along the path the trail was originally laid down in.

Other than that I think they're okay....just the way they are now it looks like you're flying around with a bunch of white rope swinging from the back of your ship.

Hated the old engine trails, hate the new ones. I don't understand the appeal at all. I'll be turning them off just like the good old days.

What would be infinitely better is if the visual effect for the Mach disks was more transparent and larger, not to mention more diamond shaped instead of triangular.

Is that true ?! I didn't yet have a chance to go and look at them. If that is the case, then it's HORRIBLE. What?

Not sure they're rendering properly on my Macbook Pro. 13" with the Intel 3000 graphics chip. Game looks great, but the trails are just wispy whitish lines, they don't bloom or glow like they do in the screens/vids I've been seeing elsewhere.

Bumping because the current engine trails are bad. I will be disabling them on the release of the patch if they are released in their current state.

They do look wierd-- more like the engine trails from the highly-stylized alliance tournament intro graphics than something that belongs next to all these new, cinematic-quality graphics we have in EVE now.

Personally I'd either revise the effect completely. I think they look really plastic-y and goofy-- they're way too opaque and I don't like the way you can see the polygons wrap around the ends of spaceship engines. If they were some cool, translucent/semi-transparent effect that looked awesome (see your own loginscreen maller or pictures of ion thrusters IRL) they'd be great but as is they just kind of look silly and out of place.

e: I updated my client again and took another look today. The trails seem to look weirder on some ships than on others-- sometimes they seem to be too bright and opaque. On other ships full speed leaves them with a nice level of transparency.

Also, the new engine effects on some ships (with the heat-shimmer + glow) looks fantastic-- please, please continue to apply this to all ships.

Also also, I really liked your concept art for the Talos with its hall-thruster-esque ring engines. They could look really good on TQ :3

They're very cool but they need to scale down a bit in length. I'm not riding a motorcycle from Tron...

I love the new engine trails. They look good and seem to be very light on gpu resources.

Though that doesn't mean they can't stand a few improvements, like better 'physics' with respect to ship movement and attitude, better scaling to hull size, and maybe a little roughness added in like some mach disks or something. Also, the trails need better antialiesing (this is especially apparent when a ship is turning).

Edit: one other thing - the trails need to be visible from much farther since their only practical function is to indicate the other ship's speed and heading.

That's way too fuzzy; looks like cotton coming out of the engines.

I fear that's impossible. It would equal to more lag.

So... we have the old school thruster trails back. Nice.

Problem is that they don't fit anymore with the more realistic graphics. OP is right. Need a little iteration on that.
Yeah so explain to me, please, how a client side graphics effect cause server side latency. Please do share, I am genuinely intrigued.

I thought all engines will now have that 'nozzle glow' that we saw on the Incarna login Maller and the winter expansion web page background image. I wonder if that's still coming?

All V3'd ships will have the 'nozzle glow' effect, that is currently all Caldari/Gallente sub-capital ships.

From the YouTube footage of the new trails, I will certainly be turning them off. They're ugly, and completely immersion breaking. The only place that they might look appropriate is in warp, which is the only place that they don't appear.

I hope CCP has put as much effort into reworking the thruster effects on V3'd ships as they have into their Tron beams. There are horrific clipping issues on the thrusters on several TQ models/skins.
