And I still don't have my purple hair or bitchinawesome face visor back yet. Can you have someone get on that please?

This data is a fixed size, in an environment of ever increasing storage capacity. Sad to see this historical resource go. "EVE FOREVER" is apparently only a forward-looking tagline. Sad

2 or 3 backups is better than one...
CCP, if established community resources like Karbowiak, Chribba are interested in hosting it, please provide them a private link.

Please let us get a dump of all the images.

EDIT: I'm trying to figure out how to scrape this. Does anyone know how to get a list of toon names and/or ids?

That is my old portrait for example, but it's not as simple as incrementing the 2 to a 3 to get the next valid id. Has anyone tried this?

Seriously. Give it to the C-man. He's offered, and we all know if there's anyone in this game who's good on his word, it's Chribba.

I second this! While it seems to me CCP could keep it (it doesn't take that much space and I imagine not much $$ either), this is a good solution.

CCP just check with Chribba before making any further decisions.

He knows right from wrong as well as the importance of history.

At the very least allow him to complete a damage limitation exercise and give him the data

We're figuring out what happened to this old server and hopefully we can resurrect it for some limited period of time. But please note that the character creator part of Incursions was deployed on 18 Jan 2011, there are now 2 years and 9 months since this service entered deprecation when the current Image Server was deployed. Stay tuned for more news.

I for one feel the old ones are a part of history and are very sad to see this being shut down. Would be happy to try keep running it myself if it is possible to get a complete dump of all old characters.

The portraits holds a lot of memory of the old characters and do serve a purpose to all players that have been in since before Incarna.

(Also keeping it live for a week wasn't long time at all... especially not if there's some sort of attempt to "save" as many avatars as possible.)

I used to look like this:

Then something horrible happened to my face. My word, I used to be such a pimp!

Also. Save the archive. It's peanuts in the storage terms these days.

Gonna pitch in my 2 ISK worth of opinion to this topic as well.

To CCP :

The old Character Avatar Portraits are a major piece of Eve History and should definitely be kept in an archive just like the old forums. That way anyone can view it whenever they wished, even if it's just for nostalgic reasons.

Players can then download their old Avatar Portraits and upload them to an Image Hosting Site at their own convenience.

Also making these old portraits available just for a short time is unfair to other players who are currently offline due to various reasons.

Bottom line - stop deleting Eve History.

Actually, it kinda is. Just increment until you get an error.

I wouldn't want to actually do this however, without CCP's OK...

e: if you're worried about filling your drive with placeholder images, you could probably md5sum each image as you snatch it, and compare the hash to all other known hashes, discarding the new image if there's a match.

Old Portrait Services Temporarily Re-enabled
23.10.2013 13:37
By CCP Falcon

After several queries from the community regarding the availability of the server hosting pre Incursion character portraits, we have decided to temporarily re-enable this service to allow players to download their own old portraits, along with any others they wish to keep for nostalgic reasons. This service will remain online until downtime on Monday, October 28th when it will be retired permanently.

There are various player-created tools out there to compare old portraits from before the release of the new character creator to the newer carbon based character portraits, which unfortunately, will cease to pull the old portraits once the server is offlined for the final time on Monday.

While we appreciate the player effort to create these sites and value their contribution to the history of the community immensely, we feel that the time to retire this legacy service has now come.

If you truly valued the contributions of the community members who created the various Avatar Portrait sites then you wouldn't be deleting the old character portraits database. Not to mention break multiple links in various old/new Avatar forum threads.

There's been way too many nostalgic aspects of this game already deleted such as the original 60 Tutorial Agents offering 'The Endless Battle' missions, the last 2 remaining Concord Agent missions from Christer Fuglesang & Jeremy Tacs, the hull models of Command Ships being changed, etc.

Just thinking about removing an Eve Online Legacy is Heresy in itself but to actually do it is nothing more than a Travesty.

Thanks again CCP Falcon and CCP Explorer I really do appreciate your efforts.

And thank you every one that took the time to post here.

I was glad to find out I was not the only one who cared about this. I am a rather non-tech person, I don’t know anything about modern social media, or keep up on inter-net memes or any thing like that. So I am a tad bit surprised that I (of all people) seem to have been the first one to notice.

Finally I would like to throw my support behind Chribba taking stewardship of the old portraits. Though I may not know him personally his reputation certainly shows him to be the right man for the job.

Yeah, something like this could be done in theory. In practice, however, I don't think it would be feasible. Carmen is a 2003 toon, and my ID is 752,410,442. CCP either has a big auto increment value or has some other scheme for cooking up IDs. Either way, not something I'd want to attempt, especially with only a couple of days until the demise of the old character portrait server.

I wonder why CCP wants to take it down. Say there were 5 million portraits at 12KB each, we're talking about 58GB of data, and I can't imagine that these images need to be served up all that often. You could do this easily on a $9/mo GoDaddy hosting plan. That's peanuts compared to CCP's overall server load.

I get that CCP likely wants to move on, putting the past behind them, but these portraits have huge sentimental and historic value to a lot of us, why take it down? Straight
