Hi!

In the next days we will be running a test on Singularity to upgrade the database to SQL Server 2012. We will be testing performance and stability to make sure everything is ready for the upgrade of Tranquility at some later point.

Details: A copy of the current Sisi DB was taken yesterday, which is now running SQL Server 2012. Tomorrow we will switch Singularity to this DB, which means a roll-back of Singularity to the state of Monday. On Thursday we will run a mass test on this setup, which should also stress the DB a bit. Next week we plan to switch back to the old DB (again some kind of roll-back).

With dates (future dates are subject to change):
Oct 21 - Current Sisi (let's call it DB A) is copied to DB B
Oct 23 - Sisi is switched from DB A to DB B
Oct 24 - Mass Test
Oct 29 - Sisi is switched back to DB A

SP for the mass test will be applied on both databases. All other changes on the temporary database will be lost after we change back to the old DB.

Does this mean that the Rubicon features will be deployed back to Sisi only after this DB-test?

No, the Rubicon features will probably be deployed back to Sisi within a few hours of the DB switch (or even at the same time).

Yay, upgrades!

Any particular reason for upgrading, support running out? Numbers, graphs or descriptions of the improvements is always a pleasure to digest.

Hooray, Rubicon is coming back to SiSi!

Also, you typoed "Singularity" in the thread title.

Is there going to be any noticeable difference in performance with an updated SQL database, and is there going to be a dev blog regarding this or is this little thread going to be it?

Short update:

Singularity is currently down for the DB upgrade. The update to Rubicon will happen later (probably late afternoon, if nothing breaks).

I don't have enough details, but I will push for a dev blog about this (probably when TQ is being upgraded).

Singularity is now open, running on the new DB.

The server will go down again in a few hours for the update to Rubicon.

Quick question. Does this mean anything I did between when the DB was taken and when you switch it is lost? I drop a fair bit of ihubs, and did a fair bit of hauling in between those dates. Will I need to do that all over again?

Not lost no. The database on the SQL 2008 instance is and will be in the same state as when we shut down Singularity for this temporary SQL 2012 test.

As CCP Habakuk said earlier, there will be a proper DEV (Tech) blog on this project but not until after we go live on Tranquility.
It will hopfully be filled with fancy graphs and numbers to compare. We've started gathering info to use in that blog.

2012 has some support for new cpu instruction sets as any new release has, but also has some memory management goods behind the scenes.

Ah, almost forgetting, there is also this

Singularity has been switched back to the old DB.

We are still experiencing problems with login through the launcher, but this should be fixed soon.
