I actually like that. I also like how people are judging the effectiveness of a user interface based on a static image, because that totally makes sense. The current interface doesn't exactly look user friendly either if you just look at it for a second. we're all just used to it.

Some elements I like, some not so much. I like the images for the locked targets and the color I assume indicating standing towards individual targets. The selected item window being turned into an informational popup of the object is nice as well. As a personal preference note I'm not to big a fan of the capacitor display anyways so I have no qualms about it changing. OH seems more clearly visually defined as well, but the heat gauges and buttons could use some work IMHO.

All that said, I'm a bit put off by some of the parts with no background like the chat as I often lose viability if something bright like a gas cloud is there. It seems to be taken care of for the ship hud, but relocated to chat. Not a fan of that. I'm also having an issue determining anything regarding the Manticorax's HP. The HUD also seems to waste some considerable space.

Im not sure if I like it. Some aspects I do like, others I find unneeded and distracting.

I will be interested to see the final iteration of this UI concept.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

There's little broken with the current UI style IMO. Some of the functionality could be improved, the production UI (the second, not the first, lol) was very interesting, but the design is fine. Minimalistic and to the point. Not the flashy flashy stuff like they presented at EVE Vegas.

What the current interface does that the mockup does not is offer clarity. It has opacity that makes it stand out against the background; it also has transparency so negative space doesn't block anything, and has minimal non-functional bloat; it makes consistent use of pre-existing iconography, making elements easy to identify at a glance; it offers higher precision in the read-outs on top of greater contrast in both text and graphical elements, making them easier to identify and read at a glance too; it does not use bloat to present redundant and near-irrelevant information. The mock-up fails on all these rather crucial points and it offers nothing in return. It just looks pretty when used in a highly unrealistic set-up.

So yes, it makes quite a lot of sense to judge it from a static image because that still trivially highlights these issues.

I wish I would have screenshot it to give an accurate quote. But when CCP Arrow was up giving the UI presentation and showed that possible interface, people on the livestream were all "ooooh" and "ahhh" and "want!!!!".. then CCP Karkur said something to the effect of, "If you guys want stuff like that, stop throwing a fit every time we change something." As if to reinforce her comment, she some how got a person in the crowd in Las Vegas (while she was home in iceland knitting) to get up to the microphone and ***** about the undock button moving. It was probably the funniest moment of the livestream, at least for me.

Anyways, nothing to fear, they also had a new UI mockup at fanfest 2 years ago, also where shields actually showed up when taking damage. Guess what happened to those Roll

I'll file that one away. Might start adding it into my UIs from now on.

The notion that anyone could possibly be 100% against a GUI when they have no idea what options are available (such as transparency, etc) is just mind boggling.

It is a static image.

You can't possibly be totally "for" or "against" a static image of a GUI. You have no clue what settings would be available, nor what customization exists or is planned.

That image is clearly just designers' (who don't seem too experienced with the game...) prototype, not a final version.
They will give it for review to someone who has better understanding of the game and all the bloat (cpu, some ship images) will be removed.

Too early to hate on it...

The only argument "for" adopting that seems to just be "I feel like I'm in a sci-fi movie! Big smile".

Why not look at the actual usability and quality of the design? I took the liberty of marking up the bad, good, and ugly of what I see. Certain changes ("CPU" display, bad targeting icons, difficult to parse shield/armor/struct) makes me think that whoever designed this has never actually played Eve extensively, or at least has no clue which UI elements/features are important and used regularly.

Overall, I'm all for "shiny" and "ooh pretty sci-fi" rather than boring spreadsheets in space. However, there is a huge gap between that and a un-compact, inefficient (duplicate info), and incomprehensible UI. This mockup trends more towards the latter in trying to achieve the former.

tl;dr: No. Try again with a better/iterated UI.

Ed: "But this is just a mockup, you have to ~imagine~ what the real one would look like" is not an argument. Your imagination cannot be objectively marked up and receive feedback.
