HELP: EVE hard locking Ubuntu - In Space only

Hey gang. I hope you can give me some pointers here. I'm having a really frustrating problem where EVE will hardlock my computer in certain situations, mostly during warp or jump. When the computer hardlocks, nothing works to recover the system - alt-tab, ctrl-alt-f2, ctrl-alt-backspace, xkill... the only out is to use the alt-sysreq-REISUB to safely restart or to manually restart the machine with the power button. I currently have one character that is stuck in space, as my computer will lock when I begin automatically warping back from the safespot. This begun happening today; I played quite a bit last night without issue. Before this started happening, I noticed with the FPS monitor open that upon initiating warp or jump, even though the FPS monitor would still show framerates between 40-60FPS, the actual displayed framerate would drop drastically, perhaps less than 10FPS.

Here is my environment:

System:
Host: Draco-Ubuntu Kernel: 3.2.0-54-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Ubuntu 12.04 precise
Machine:
Mobo: Gigabyte model: EP45-UD3P version: 1.0 Bios: Award version: F10 date: 02/05/2010
CPU:
Dual core Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400 (-MCP-) cache: 6144 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 ssse3 vmx)
Clock Speeds: 1: 2000.00 MHz 2: 2000.00 MHz
Graphics:
Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Juniper XT [Radeon HD 5770]
X.Org: 1.11.3 driver: fglrx Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series GLX Version: 4.2.12217 - CPC 12.104 (Catalyst 13.4)
Audio:
Card-1: Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series] driver: snd_ctxfi Sound: ALSA ver: 1.0.24
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Juniper HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5700 Series] driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-3: Plantronics driver: USB Audio
WINE:
Version: wine-1.6

Here are the troubleshooting steps I've done so far:

  • Rebooted the computer
  • Tried Fullscreen and Windowed mode
  • Zoomed out all the way while warping
  • Cleared cache and settings
  • Upgraded WINE to version 1.7.4 and rebooted
  • Downgraded back to WINE 1.6 and rebooted
  • Upgraded Catalyst to 13.11 Beta1 and rebooted
  • Downgraded back to Catalyst 13.4 and rebooted

The next few things I plan to try are blowing away the wine prefix I created for EVE and starting over, and if that doesn't work, maybe reinstall Ubuntu fresh, likely upgrading to 13.10 in the process. But before I do that, does anyone have any other ideas for things I could try before I get that desperate?

Thanks!

I have some troubles - I think it is trouble with 3D in eve.
I watch it for a year - with different patches take away with the other returns.

I would stick with 12.04 LTS actually. You are more likely to get a more consistent game play experience.

To get this working on your current versino. I would recommend you blow away eve and reinstall, you might have a corrupt texture or something. But run the 'repair' tool first, that might catch it.

I made a guide in this forum as well. Your video drivers are the hardest part to get working, usually though.
