Firstly, I am not a published (or self published) writer, but I have wrote books before. However, they have always been for me alone; never has anyone else read anything I have wrote. (I have a series of books (6 books in total, working on a seventh) that are set in my own universe and each book is about 700-1300 pages long). To this end, I have never named them, never given them a title.

Anything I write is never named, mainly because I have no idea on how to handle that aspect of it. Names of characters, places on planets, star systems; these things I have no problem naming. But when it comes down to the final, overall title, it's always never named.

So I guess what I am asking is how do other people name their work? Do you already know exactly what you are going to call it and work on a piece revolving around that or is it dealt with afterwards?

The reason I ask this is because I have decided that I will take part in this 'Eve Fiction' contest. It is the first time I have wrote something for other people to read. I am already just over 3000 words, but the name still eludes me.

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

Usually I write the story first, then struggle for a while to find a title for it. I might think of the overall theme of the story for a day or two, then come up with a few titles that somehow describe the theme. Usually the titles are kind of "poetic" and don't give much hint about the actual content of the story.

There's also the approach used by 19th century writers such as Leo Tolstoy and Joseph Conrad, where the title just simply says what the story is about. Examples: 'The Lagoon' 'The Return' 'Because of the Dollars' 'The Warrior's Soul' 'The Lost Opportunity' 'Two Hussars' It's kind of hard to go wrong with that approach, I think.

Muchly appreciated Big smile

It's a start anyway, I tend to suck at an overall title haha
