here is the scenario in a brief format.
combat scanning, profile set for ships only, found a ship. what happens if i warp to within 100km of the ship in a cloaky manticore and the ship i have found is in/behind a force field? will i be killed by his defenses or will i get a kind of proximity warning?

thanks

you are cloaked. no one can see you!

If the ship is inside a POS forcefield and you warp-to-at-100km while cloaked you are exceedingly unlikely to land near enough to something to be decloaked. It’s possible but very unlikely.

IDK about others but I’d probably approach this matter quite differently. I’d try to make extensive use of my Directional Scanner (DS) here, before I even thought of deploying combat probes. Using your DS you will be able to locate all ships that are not at safespots or cosmic signatures, and you should be able to get a general idea of where those latter two are if needed. Not only that but using your DS will tell you whether the ship is at a POS or not, and which moon the POS is it.

Most ships you find in a system can be located using your DS, without having to deploy probes and telegraph your intentions / fit.

Once you know that a ship is at a POS, and where that POS is, you can warp to the moon (at zero is usually safe altho sometimes bubbled if null/w-space) and have a look.

Even if you do get decloaked at a hostile POS you can often / sometimes burn away from decloaking object and recloak before being targeted and killed … altho being squeezed up between a bubble, the POS forcefield, and a bundle of decloaking cans can pretty much be your death knell. You will not get any sort of ‘proximity warning’, the first you will notice (if you’re watching) is the POS defence modules yellow-boxing and then red-boxing you … and if those modules include weapons you will probably die shortly thereafter.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

thanks
i had already used d scan to establish this and due to time zone differences i knew i was in there alone for a while so combats were safe to use :)

If you got a 100% hit, check your map. Is the hit displayed on top of a moon? D-scan that moon and check if there are defenses and/or a forcefield. Proceed to warp to the moon, not the 100% scanner hit, at range. If you can't tell, warping in at range is your best bet. Sure, you can escape from a POS when decloaked, but you will also have blown your cover.
