Hey,

So for a start - I'm a total noob as far as forum managment goes and I've been having problems with managing the registration and activation of users on my forum. The problem is , atm, that bots have taken over the registration and they spam me with users that I just have to delete. It wasn't that bad when it was a few a week but now it's just insane.

How can I create an option for my forum to allow registration only if you type in a random box of text, etc? I really need that and can't seem to know the name so I can't even find it on the internet. And i know it's somewhere there! Link to an explanation is all I need, I learn fast and I want to do it on my own, just with a little push in the right direction.

Manual or e-mail activation I know how to do and I've done that, but I need the registration limitation.

Cheers and thanks in advance!
Dr K

edit - it's phpbb, newest version, just updated it.

this may or may not help: http://blog.phpbb.com/2009/06/27/3-0-6-captcha-plugins-and-you/

Sounds like you just need a captcha during registration.

haha, thanks. Glad I could help. Chem teacher of mine a few years ago was actually having the same problem... all the bots were posting massive pictures of p0rn. Wouldn't have gone over well had a school admin looked at it. He solved the problem by adding a simple captcha, and bam, spam eliminated.

That's a very useful link. I've had exactly the same issue with phpbb. Made my users enter some random text that they can see ingame, but a captcha would be better. Big smile
