A Serious Question on CCP's Tear Harvesting

So this question has come up a lot, but I can't find a thread specifically dedicated to it.

Where does CCP find these people who come to the game and rage? I mean, we all know generally about "Be the Villain" ads, but many people clearly did not come to the game from that. Where does CCP advertise and what types are people are targeted? Like what kinds of keywords on Adwords or what kinds of demographics on Facebook? I've long wondered if there are ads on the Disney Channel or maybe specific TV shows geared towards people who are more likely to rage if someone shoots at them in an internet spaceship shooting game.

If I joined the affiliate program, would CCP help me find these people too?

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

They're targeted ads aimed at young college kids who shop at Hot Topic, listen to bands like As I Lay Crying and Avenged Emofold, and claim Ulquiorra and Sephiroth as their favorite fictional characters. You know.... guys like Rezell.

Then, you mistake my straightforward-ness or poke-poster-with-stick comments for anger... I might'n not want you to do that. I am nice man with happy feelings, all the time.

Wait.... I lied. I get mad about THREE things, in the whole world:

1. Nerfing stuff. "Buff all the things/nerf nothing" is my motto.
2. Nullsec makes me angry because it badtouched me, last time I was there.
3. Running out of rum.

an interesting OP

I have to say i like your optimistic outlook. The theory that CCP are actively seeking bronies, furries and carebears with anger management issues to give us all something to shoot at /mock /feel better than might help me sleep better at night.

I look at the inquisition, pol pot, 3rd reich, stalins soviet union, mccarthyism, sudan, congo, northern ireland......i could pretty much go on for ever listing pretty much every hisorical event.
The people that are happy to plan and/or help carry out such evil seem to be very easy to find and crop up wherever they are needed. The human mind is capable of great self delusion so we can praise the heros of the french resistance and curse the evil taliban road side bombers with no hint of cognitive dissonance. We can question the mindset of the 11/9 bombers and not question the bombs we drop from drones on civilians every day (in an alarming number of countries).
The only conclusion is that people capable of these things are all around us and i try and avoid too much contact with people that seethe with rage, erupt in anger at the smallest thing (like their retriever blowing up) and strongly hold irrational and profoundly unscientific views.
Anyway my view is that there is no need for CCP to actively seek these people as a significant fraction of the human race is like this but do a good job of hiding it in their day to day lives.
I suggest you all go with Erotica's explanation as mine has lead me to drink far more than is healthy.

As a young college kid, this could be written in another language and it would make exactly as much sense as it does when I read it now. Is there really a band called As I Lay Crying? And what is a Ulquiorra?

The actual name of the band is As I Lay Dying.... they're wannabe "metal", but everyone except their fans knows they're about as hard as the inside of a Twinkie.

And it's not surprising you didn't get it. Afterall, I'm old. We speak a different language than you kids with your "swag" and your "YOLO".

It's entirely possible that you saw an ad that was actually different from the one I think you are referring to, but in the "Be The Villain" ad I have in mind, it actually says some other very important things before it says "Be The Villain". You see it as a "Be The Villain" ad, but maybe you should go back and look at it again. Maybe try stepping out of your space persona. Maybe even try stepping into a different space persona for a moment, one someone might construct if they were raised watching Captain Kirk and Luke Skywalker run around trying to save the galaxy. We don't all fantasize about being Darth Vader. Some of us have even been Darth Vader and would like to escape that, if only in a video game.

"We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are."

I think your question has a very deep and meaningful answer, and I think it is illuminated by answering this much simpler question: What does a "hero" do in the face of failure and impotence?

Everybody cries at some point or another.

The little bees? Check
High sec miners? Check
Moon miners? Check
Null sov? Check
Null NPC? Check
Low sec 'pirates'? Check
Nano HAC pilots? Check
Gate gankers? Check
Deep Space Bookmark makers? Check
Mission runners? Check
Faction War people? Check
Wormhole inhabitants? Check
ETC
ETC
ETC

Since day one there is always some group that feels unfairly treated.

CCP doesn't have to attract this type of person. These people actually pay CCP for the right to come and cry here. Some things gamers do just astounds me.

They should have a side campaign to the "be a villain" ads, "EVE online: be really really annoying"

Tell me again about how every playstyle you dont engage in "doesn't require any effort" and everyone who does it needs to die in a fire. Be sure to mention about how you tried it once but it was too easy/boring/ethnic-homophobic slur.
