So i just upgraded my GPU to a ASUS Matrix HD7970 Platinum and since i installed it i have been having a problem with frame rate spikes.

The spikes seem to be when i enter a command (warp, lock etc) with the frame rate dropping from a solid 60 to the low teens.

I have set the graphics to low quality and i get the same issue, so im thinking its some software/driver issue.

any help with this problem would be amazing

cheers

just a suggestion here im no expert
but you could open up the resource monitor (ctrl alt +del )>>task manager> performace tab
then when you lag happens see what jumps to the top of the list when you sort it by cpu.

if its system inturrupt , it might be hardware conflicting.
that video card of your has on board hdmi sound output? might want to disable that in the device manager.

I am having exactly this same problem since upgrading to a PNY NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti 1024MB card. At first I thought this might be related to the fact that I'm using an unusual setup (I set up a desktop GPU on my laptop as an external device over an ExpressCard 2.0 port). The game would not hitch / stutter / lag before on the integrated Intel HD3000 video, on low settings of course. It hitches on the new card regardless of settings.

Since integrated video runs off of shared memory and my new setup is actually pushing data into a video card's memory instead, my working theory is that a bunch of this stuff is getting cached into RAM and then burst to the card all at once during certain in-game operations. Just like you, I experience hitching when attempting to warp, etc. When I'm on grid, it only hitches very rarely and is less pronounced. Otherwise, everything is running very smoothly at the highest settings (again, reminding that lowering settings does not cause this problem to go away).

I've noticed that the hitching is more pronounced when I attempt to warp to a POS which has a lot of defenses, modules, and ships in it most of the time and far less pronounced when I attempt to warp to a wormhole (which pretty much only has that wormhole on the grid I'll be landing in). Is it possible that there's some pre-caching to start loading grid objects to the card for the grid we're attempting to warp to? The hitching occurs on the initiation of warp and a little bit while in warp to a destination. If this is the case, it may improve performance for some people and hurt performance for others, which is exactly the experience some of us have.

Edit: Someone else who was having this problem (I've been reading older threads on the topic) was using Windows 8 and downgraded to resolve his issue. I'm also using Windows 8. If that's a common thread, next Thursday 8.1 should be out and we can see whether any of the tweaks to the OS have helped.

I have recently done some testing on Singularity. This issue is completely resolved for me in the Rubicon build currently available. It stinks that I'll have to wait about a month before I get proper performance on my brand new video card, but at least I can see the change coming.

Tto anyone else experiencing this problem, please check out Singularity and report back here whether that build fixes these problems for you. There are a lot of separate threads about exactly the same problem throughout the forum.

Thanks for all the responses, most helpful.

I will try to disable the HDMI sound as im not using any on the ridiculous 4 hdmi slots on the card

I also think it may be a pci-e slot issue on my mobo since i have had to put in the second slot which is supposed to be x16 but i can only get it to run at x4. Gonna strip my computer and cut my case up a bit more so i can fit the card in the top slot

Interesting, I've not got the frame rate issue on Tranq, but on Sisi, especially within the CQ my frame rate is bouncing around (between 10-15fps).

Currently have a ATi Radeon 5850
