Need advice on hauling / avoiding being ganked

I have been hauling using eve-central for a long time and have made over 2 bil isk doing it. I now have a Charon and need some advice on what the maximum value of cargo I should carry to avoid being ganked is.
I only fly in hi sec (although I know that doesn't make much different with ganking.

Can someone tell me: what is the amount of cargo (value) that I am likely to be ganked at.
Also, is there a more suitable ship that I could use to haul large amounts of cargo?

about a billion, give or take.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Use courier contracts with a collateral. Zero effort required on your part, and if the courier gets blown up you make ISK.

Some will blow you up even if freighter is empty. Welcome to EVE Online.

The EVE-kill boards show many a freighter merely killed for lulz as the previous posters have said.

Most of the freighter kills i can seen recently are (unsurprisingly) done by goons in a curious mixture of catalysts, brutixs and Talo.

If you truly want to fly the safest you can -
  • Fly with an in-corp stasis web alt
  • Never (repeat: NEVER) autopilot
  • Find out how many catalysts/tornados it would take to gank your ship, then find out the cost of all those ships. Don't fly with cargo above that cost
  • Disclaimer: The above is still not a 100% guarantee gank-proof way of flying

  • Usually I give snide and/or sarcastic remarks on the forums. This is not that time.

Use Red Frog :) Stick collateral on to cover, and away you go. (Push are cheaper, but I have never used them)

Real gankers gank freighters just for the tears. Some of the best tears have come from empty freighters Big smile.

The best advice I can give is to pay for a permit from the New Order. Many freighters carrying illegal mining supplies through highsec have been lost because they failed to pay for a permit and live by the Code. Also, do not violate the Code by autopiloting or engaging in other bot aspirant behaviors such as using a scout on another client.

Also, be sure to pay the Goons their fee. If you do not, you are likely to be subjected to their inspections. If you hide your cargo in cans or plastic wrap (couriers), they are likely to blow up your ship to see what you are hiding.

As for maximum value, carry only what you need and nothing more. If you are caught carrying goods for known Code violators, you will be subject to asset forfeiture.

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

Spending your free time on the internet for the purpose of finding the "best tears" makes you so cool. You must have so much going for you, I'm jealous. Only a real winner logs onto the internet to bother people.

So they are not winners because you disagree with them and play differently? I bet you don't like other types of people that do not match your ideas of the "perfect" person (someone like yourself) as well?

We have been hearing that for quite a while now. It should be added to the bingo card. Yet instead, interest (as measured in pageviews) and membership only continues to increase!

I totally agree with these comments. There a few "advanced" things you can do to remain safe as well.

    1. Have a third character (In addition to the freighter pilot and in-corp web alt) either a jump or two ahead of you or in the trade hub you plan on visiting. *observe*.

    2. Do not keep a regular schedule when moving stuff.

    3. Do not keep your transports or freighter at the same location constantly. Where people know it's there. Make a transport, dock the ship somewhere different from where it came from.

    4. Do not announce to your friends, corp mates, alliance members that you "are making a freighter run". Someone in that group does not like you- and will leak your position/cargo.

    5. Do not accept a courier contract and immediately depart with the load. Make sure any contract you accept is from an individual, and accept it when they are offline. Then move it. See #6.

    6. The contract system is flawed because it tells the person who made the contract who is working on it. Public contracts will kill your ships. You've been warned.

    It's all about operational security.

it's actually borderline insane how many RF trips you can pay for, for the price of a charon. also, if you can't make more in the time spent not hauling than you 'd spend on an RF contract... you're terrible at making isk (even mining, i was earning more isk/hour than it would cost to pay RF to do my hauling)

i think it worked out at like 5m for a contract from my mining system to jita, yet in the time it'd take a charon to do a round trip i'd earn substantially more than that.

Yay, this account hasn't had its signature banned. or its account, if you're reading this.
