US Army developing Dust suit

Or you could call it a Starship Troopers or Iron Man suit. Not sure what useful application it would have, other than armor protection and the "carrying large loads" the article mentions.

The US Army is working to develop "revolutionary" smart armour that would give its troops "superhuman strength".

It is calling on the technology industry, government labs and academia to help build the Iron Man-style suit.

Other exoskeletons that allow soldiers to carry large loads much further have already been tested by the army.

The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (Talos) would have such a frame but would also have layers of smart materials fitted with sensors.

The suit would also need to have wide-area networking and a wearable computer similar to Google Glass, the US Army said.
Increase strength

It should be made of smart material fitted with sensors to monitor body temperature, heart rate and hydration levels.

Large robot

In an interview with US news site NPR, MIT professor Gareth McKinley compared the futuristic armour to that seen in Hollywood films.

"It sounds exactly like Iron Man," he said.

"The other kind of things that you see in the movies... would be the kind of external suit that Sigourney Weaver wears in Aliens, where it's a large robot that amplifies the motions and lifting capability of a human."

The aim is the get the Talos armour out in the field within three years.

What happens when said soldier wearing bulky exoskeleton suit with various electronic sensors and computers and hydraulics and such is hit with a fire hose?

Something like this?

I actually liked the movie back in the late eighties/ early nineties.
But I guess today, too much of the dystopian media satire has already become reality, so maybe the movie wouldn't have quite the same impact on you now.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I liked running man...

I have been expecting the army to get onto something like this for a while now. I'm really surprised we don't have more technically advanced (as we commonly have seen in sci/fi for years) military suits and gear. I mean, where are our tesla coil toting shock troopers a la CnC: Red Alert?

Note to self: develop cheap, man-portable, throw-away, tactical EMP device.

considering the way cellphones are developing, I doubt you'd get more then 1 zap off before the battery goes flat, if even that

Also I'm not sure about all this more high-tech army development. Imagine "smart" guns. Soldier lays in ambush, enemy walks past, soldier aims gun at enemy and pulls the trigger and then a pop-up shows;
You have pulled the trigger. Would you like to?
a: Kill the enemy
b: scare teh crap out of him
c: call hq on advice what to do next?

or "this gun made an improbable aim. Press ctrl+alt+trigger to reboot"

I'm not so sure about all the high tech stuff either, especially for infantry. It would probably takes 10 guys to supply and maintain one guy in a mech suit. And cost as much in resources as, who knows, may 20-30 regular infantry. Does that ultimately mean that, in all the reality of a real combat situation (where you almost always have less than the amount of forces you need), he's end up having to try to do the job of two to three infantry squads? If it's a small wars situation, and you're facing lots of guys with cheap AKs and RPGs, are you better off with a few high tech soldiers or more low tech soldiers?

I always laughed my arse off at the fact that the robot sounded like it was one of the those dinosaurs that fell on its back in one of those 70's-80's movies about prehistoric man. Lol

Honestly more low tech soldiers. A few high tech soldiers are great for surgical jobs. But they suck for occupations and take and hold.

Information overload gets men killed.

Thats why the IDF still mostly look low tech but have a lot of high tech available to the officers to relay, but the average foot slogger hasnt changed much in 20 years.

I figure programs like this one are mostly for these kinds of development companies to get cushy government contracts, make the suits then have the politicians that paying $150k per suit is too expensive.

Exactly like in the new batman movies. Shocked

This. The movie is similar in taste to Videodrone. Running man is based on a short story by Stephen King so it has a solid foundation, but as Zimi said it may have lost some of its impact as 'it' has become reality.... of sorts that is as we are not quite to the point where we are actually selling outright death matches to the public.

Looks like a cool and ambitious project. Not to mention expensive.

But the real question is. Can it stop AK-47s , RPGs and IED's?

This project kind of reminds me of the turd that is the F-35.
