Or you could call it a Starship Troopers or Iron Man suit. Not sure what useful application it would have, other than armor protection and the "carrying large loads" the article mentions.

The US Army is working to develop "revolutionary" smart armour that would give its troops "superhuman strength".

It is calling on the technology industry, government labs and academia to help build the Iron Man-style suit.

Other exoskeletons that allow soldiers to carry large loads much further have already been tested by the army.

The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (Talos) would have such a frame but would also have layers of smart materials fitted with sensors.

The suit would also need to have wide-area networking and a wearable computer similar to Google Glass, the US Army said.
Increase strength

It should be made of smart material fitted with sensors to monitor body temperature, heart rate and hydration levels.

I actually liked the movie back in the late eighties/ early nineties.
But I guess today, too much of the dystopian media satire has already become reality, so maybe the movie wouldn't have quite the same impact on you now.

I'm really surprised we don't have more technically advanced (as we commonly have seen in sci/fi for years) military suits and gear. I mean, where are our tesla coil toting shock troopers a la CnC: Red Alert?

considering the way cellphones are developing, I doubt you'd get more then 1 zap off before the battery goes flat, if even that

Also I'm not sure about all this more high-tech army development. Imagine "smart" guns. Soldier lays in ambush, enemy walks past, soldier aims gun at enemy and pulls the trigger and then a pop-up shows;
You have pulled the trigger. Would you like to?
a: Kill the enemy
b: scare teh crap out of him
c: call hq on advice what to do next?

or "this gun made an improbable aim. Press ctrl+alt+trigger to reboot"

I always laughed my arse off at the fact that the robot sounded like it was one of the those dinosaurs that fell on its back in one of those 70's-80's movies about prehistoric man. Lol

Honestly more low tech soldiers. A few high tech soldiers are great for surgical jobs. But they suck for occupations and take and hold.

Information overload gets men killed.

Thats why the IDF still mostly look low tech but have a lot of high tech available to the officers to relay, but the average foot slogger hasnt changed much in 20 years.

I figure programs like this one are mostly for these kinds of development companies to get cushy government contracts, make the suits then have the politicians that paying $150k per suit is too expensive.

This. The movie is similar in taste to Videodrone. Running man is based on a short story by Stephen King so it has a solid foundation, but as Zimi said it may have lost some of its impact as 'it' has become reality.... of sorts that is as we are not quite to the point where we are actually selling outright death matches to the public.
