Linux getting a bit too mainstream for you?
Do you want to tell people "Oh that's nice, I run EVE Online on FreeBSD, you've probably never heard of it."?
Then come on down to neckbeard land. The ladytypes will be all up ons!

Tested on:
FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE-p7 amd64
nvidia-driver-319.32
i386-wine-1.7.3,1

Intel i5-2500K
Nvidia Geforce 580 GTX 3GB

This howto assumes you have an:
Xorg desktop with 3D acceleration.
A newer Nvidia card.
64 bit FreeBSD installation.

Wine installation:

64 bit systems require a prebuilt wine package.

Install latest pkgng version 1.1.4 or newer, wget and cabextract.
# cd /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/pkg/ && make install clean
# cd /usr/ports/archivers/cabextract/ && make install clean
# cd /usr/ports/ftp/wget/ && make install clean

Convert to new pkgng format.
# pkg2ng

Add custom wine repo for pkgng.
# mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos
# fetch -o /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos http://people.freebsd.org/~dbn/repos/wine.conf
# fetch -o /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos http://people.freebsd.org/~dbn/repos/wine.cert
# pkg update
# pkg install -r wine i386-wine

Patch nvidia-driver to enable 2D/3D acceleration in Wine if you are using a Nvidia card.
# sh /usr/local/share/wine/patch-nvidia.sh

Reboot to activate patched nvidia driver, or kill X and reload nvidia module.
# reboot

Run winecfg and select -> Libraries -> [New override for library: ] d3d11 -> Add -> Edit... -> Disable.

Fetch winetricks and install the usual packages.
$ wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks
$ chmod +x winetricks
$ ./winetricks corefonts d3dx9_36 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010

Install EvE Online as you would.
$ wine EVE_Online_Installer_XXXXXX.exe

The usual things don't work, like Captain's Quarters.

Cor! That sure looks playable!

My system installation notes.

You could also use PC-BSD 9.2 and install wine from the gui :)

Good writeup.
I also run Eve through wine on FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE-p7 am64.
I prefer to build pkg myself, but it's still nice to see there's an (easier) option.

As a ladytype, I would definitely be all up ons any neckbeard running Eve through FreeBSD.

Thanks for the writeup, I just can't tear myself away from Fedora's Shadowman. He and I have had a friends with benefits thing going on for almost 20 years.
