What does Eve do right?

Good:
The sandbox, social structure inc. the inherent intrigue, graphics, scale, tutorials, variety and depth, pvp, real loss and risk vs reward, market and economy, faction warfare.

Bad: WiS, jita spam, node strength, mining, corp roles and shares.

Ugly: TiDi, supercaps, sov grinding (probably only cos I'm doing 7 CTAs a week atm), war mechanics, grinding for isk, POS management.

A brutally brilliant game over all, had to think hard to come up with anything bad. Ugly is just overcomplicated or in need of fidling, but ultimately working.

It's the skills system... wanting to unlock new things. That's why new solid content is required and new skills too, so that people like me remain interested. When you get towards the 100M SPs and you are specialised, you need something new to focus on.

Integrate Dust moore deeply, it will be better for both sides.

Provides a platform for people to get really angry with each other.

That has to be a good thing, right? Get it all out in a virtual world. Keeps them from taking a tire iron to their neighbor IRL.

Best mainsteam sandbox out there right now
Best game market I've seen
Good graphics
CCP is producing WoD Online so maybe EVE players might get early access

Fear of loss and satisfaction of gain. And it suits my casual playstyle.

Three things primarily:

1. The social side I find it better than other games that have online multiplayer modes

2. Win and lose aspect serves my competitive streak

3. It's hard and there's no instawin

Just on the "do right" side - it lets one take a break for a while without the "cram for college exams" feel you get in other MMO's as you "catch up" and what not.

It is extremely friendly to those with less dedicated time to play vs just your "hardcore" types that can grind in any MMO environment. We have those but they don't gain that much over the people with "less dedication" to R&R time.

I like having the "choice" to do whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want. The dumbing down, and hand-holding in most mmo's now days is out of control IMO.

Eve was my first MMO, so in my eyes there is Eve . . . and hotkey/toolbar/rotation based MMOs.

Obviously I prefer the Eve side of things. Also it has nothing to do with me being addicted to it.

If you have to ask what good does Eve do right....

can I have your stuff?

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

1. Lore: EVE has some of the best sci-fi lore out there. In terms of quantity and quality, it's really only rivaled by by the big guys like Star Wars.

2. Open world: EVE functions like a true open world game. Whether you log on or not, things are changing and developing. You might wake up the next morning to find that a major alliance was toppled and suddenly vast tracts of space are up for grabs, or that there was a terrorist attack in Jita or something.

3. Economy: EVE certainly has the best economy out of ANY game, period. Really hard to argue with that.

4. Character progression: I don't have to grind endlessly just to get the next ship, yet I still feel rewarded when I eventually do get it. The skill system is perfect if you ask me. Every day I feel my character is a little bit better, yet still not good enough, which is an extremely addictive aspect to the game.

5. Absolutely brutal: EVE is a tough nut to crack. It's hard to learn and even harder to master. Yet that's what makes it awesome. Even when you've been playing for years and years you can still learn something new.

6. So many things to do: Simple, there's just a lot of stuff to do. You probably won't like all of it but it will take several years just to give all the playstyles and professions in EVE a fair amount of time to do everything. And considering that there is a new expansion roughly every 6 months, the list of things to try out may never end for those who really like to go deep and do everything to it's fullest extent.

Watch_ Fred Fred Frederation_ and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it!

My favorite is sandbox pvp. You never know if you're the hunter or the hunted, and more often then not things go wrong. But, when they do, and you saw it coming and pulled through anyways, there's not a feeling like it.

Second is definitely how money is handled. I'll never forget seeing that Moracha destroyed by that ishkur. A hundred billion in a limited-release ship killed (in large part) by a cheap ass ishkur with a pilot that knew his mechanics and flew his ship right. If that david vs goliath story doesn't sum up eve, I don't know what does.

Last is progression. It's the combination of passive skilling, the fact that 70m sp isn't necessarily better then 7m sp (but you always feel the need to keep training because some fights are just that close), and how not all progression is done through game mechanics. Noobs can be directors, and bittervets can be grunts. Every moment is spent progressing your character in some way or another, and it can really make you feel proud of your EVE career.

That's the highlights for me. But the true list goes on and on.

Eve does a huge amount of things right, the problem people have is the mistakes they have made are huge, obvious and so easily avoidable.

Actually, it kind of reminds me of playing chess -- it's "easy" to learn the basics (guns to kill things, miners to mine, pawns only move forward and attack diagonally, Bishops only move diagonally, etc). But then there's a whole additional cliff to fall down -- if he does the Queen's Gambit, I counter with Albin's Counter Gambit or Slav Defense or ...

Same as here with "We should bring damps or jammers to counter their logi that they brought because we're brawlers that we brought because they're snipers that they brought because ..."

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia
