There are security reasons why that's a bad idea that I can't really argue with.

Wait wait wait...... so you take a LARGE portion of the company out on vacation and leave the game understaffed and vulnerable to such issues? Is the very nature of taking so many employees critical to the game out of the picture AT THE SAME TIME not the big issue here? It's like having 10 people staffed 24/7 at a nuclear plant to maintain functionality, and 8 out of the 10 decide to leave for lunch AT THE SAME TIME and you end up with a good 'ol russian time with the reactor going critical. That DOES NOT WORK and was irresponsible.

You clowns are some bold, ignorant, and mouthy people. This crap Faction Scorpion "ordeal" is a non-issue. The only issue I see here is that a bunch of whiny "entitled" children seem to think that Eve Online, a game popular for being unfair, should be fair. You kids need to step away from your computer for a minute and remember that CCP is not your company. You pay to play the game, and they aren't required to coddle you. The fact that they listen to you on some things is a perk of a decent company. If you don't like their game, leave.

You won't, ofcourse, because most of you scrubs are just full of hot air and mad about your "poor, pitiful pixel world". Get over it.

You mean the paying customers?

I'd like you to take a moment and step into the shoes of a CCP employee, or any employee for that matter. Imagine you've worked very hard for the last year, and you're enjoying the hot springs of a ski resort with your loving wife and two beautiful children. You get a text message on your phone as you crack open a fresh beer, and it says:

"Need you to come back to the office ASAP. Some customers are really pissed off that they didn't get free stuff.

-Boss
"

Return the question. Do you tell your boss "be right there sir" or say "Sorry, I'm on vacation"?

And besides, I guess you would have to take into consideration the quality of employment you enjoy throughout the year and weigh the pros and cons of saying "screw it" as opposed to honoring your commitments.

My boss continuously goes out of town, whether to corporate or to another facility and we hardly notice.

Not because he sucks (he is pretty awesome actually) but because he has this awesome thing that doesn't require him to be here 24/7.

It's a phone. Capable of sending emails.

Not that I'm blaming Manifest here. I actually do appreciate him taking the time to fulfill his duties and shoulder the responsibility.

I also do not think you have a full on right or wrong approach to it either. So the argument tends to take a harsher flavor than merits.

Responsibility is responsibility.

nobody reads stickies.

if you sticky it then the people who don't read them will make duplicate threads which aren't helpful.

We know you deserve a timely clarification from CCP. We appreciate the patience those in some discussions around the internet have had for us. We also understand the impatience of those that didn't. I hope that a collectively constructed devblog can happen by the end of the week that covers most of the issues that arose out of "SOMER Blink Gate", and have begun work with CCP Guard and several others around the company on it already before consulting the CSM and on to you all.

I'll be watching what CCP does, and not what they say.

If you guys can't learn from your own history, expect to revisit player outrage every 6 months until there aren't enough players left to care anymore.

Except that EVE is steadily growing, the outrage does little more then merit more press for CCP, and all press is good press if it means you're visible.

Those who quit are the one's "taking the moral high ground" allegedly, but in reality it's people who were on the verge of quitting anyway, so it's not really a loss.

I'm sure CCP really appreciates everyone that was on the verge of quitting committing to walking out the door. Didn't need those customers anyways. Not that any remaining customers would wonder who the fool is...

Sure it does, because it means you are being very silly and dumb for calling people silly and dumb when they repeat the official CCP stance.

The reality of the matter is that if CCP starts showing favouritism, contrary to their official stance, then the very foundation of their business will rapidly be lost. You may not care about them handing out BPOs or ISK, or switching sov for their favourite of the day, but when those actions rob you of your pass-time, you can feign indifference all you like but we both know it's not true.

Now you're being stupid. You're seriously going to tell me that I (a person you don't know) is going to suddeny get upset because a private company does something i don't like?

They are already doing things I don't like. If that reaches a certain threshold, I'll unsub. The above has to be the most ignorant thing I've ever see you say, because you know better than that. It's amzing how emotion can take a previoulsy reasonable person and twist them into...well, you.

Symoblism (and symbols) ARE unimportant when compared to things of actual substance. This "scandal" isn't that bad, it's a private company doling out their private (imaginary) property to people they want to (unlike the t20 thing were a guy was doing unauthorized things). What's worse than what CCP has done is a community believing that their 15 bucks entitles them to a say in how the company operates. What they are entitled to is leaving if they don't like certain things.

Give me back my likes, problem solved lol.

But seriously, you people have a serious problem. You're upset, honestly upset, about vapor and pixels. If it makes you feel better to blame me because YOU take a video game situation too seriously, then feel free to. But it doesn't change the fact that you're angry about what a video game maker did.

We get all that. What we question is why in the hell something like this would diminish your enjoyment. I'm flying around shooting stuff right now, and not one Ishkone Scorp has shown up to deny me some pleasure lol.

So if it doesn't affect you personally, then it's no big deal right? When T20 was handing out bpos to BoB I was in a highsec corp doing missions - since I wasn't a manufacturer, wasn't in big nullsec wars, or involved in how they're financed, etc then I suppose the whole T20 thing wasn't an issue at all, right?

Anyway, let me just run through some people, situations, etc to demonstrate how this affects the sandbox and enjoyment.
Collectors. Traders. People who already owned one of these ships. Similar organisations that compete with somer who don't get any such recognition or gifts. The fact that the players who were gifted them compete with everyone else in this game - whether thats ship pvp, or market pvp, or competing with other organisations, or their ability to back/help their friends/allies using isk/resources granted to them by CCP. Etc.

These are just some of the people and ways in which directly, and secretly, giving one group a bunch of high-value items can alter the way in which the game plays out - and that in turn can impact on the enjoyment people have. And that's just the direct affects - you also have to realise that when it comes to games and competing, if you know that someone else playing is getting an unfair advantage that creates a rather negative atmosphere / feeling for lots of people - even if they're not directly affected by it, they don't like the fact that it's happening.

Not to mention that even if you realize it would not affect you now, it may have an effect on you later, but because of that chance, you just now this very minute devalued your own subscription fee;

You created a shelf life to your amount of enjoyment you will receive from this game.

As of right now, the whole Somer Blink thing does not affect me, buyer beware and all that. I don't care that CCP chooses to do what they want. I have no say in the matter.

But with the realization it can or has or may happen, you lose that level of trust. And with that comes the factor of knowing if you can only play for so long until it does affect you, why bother still playing now?

No. Just realistic.
I'm telling you that no matter how much you try to feign indifference, when your pass-time gets taken away from you because the party providing it no longer has the ability to do so due to their insistence on alienating their customers, you'll be annoyed by it.

Quote:

Incorrect. They're enormously important, and you're just being stupid by assuming that it's a binary or dichotomous state. Symbolism can kill you just as easily as substance, and can easily overwrite the actual substance if it gets ingrained enough (cf. pretty much every rebranding ever).

I underlined the part I don't agree with or ven understand. I never assigned CCP a level of trust to begin with. They are a game maker. I like their game so I subscribe. The amount of trust I grant them is that I'll get 30 days of game time for 15 bucks, and that's it (of course, the EULA says they can shutter the game at any time without refunds, so buyer beware). CCP is a company, not my buddy from down the street.

(I have a poster on my wall at work: "in God we trust, all others get ran for warrants")

That's why I say that part of the real problem here is the "violation" of some people's patently unreasonable expectations. In this case, the expectation that you could "trust" the maker of a game so vicious it makes Grand Theft Auto look like Sunday school lol.

Well, to explain...

I like this game for it's conflict. For it's sandbox.

I like this game because CCP stays out of the way and lets players decide what to do.

CCP taking a hand into community affairs as they did (the execution of it) takes away from that. It starts to encourage people to pretend they are performing and trying to impress their parents, instead of learning how to co exist with their brother/sister (yes, a parental relationship is implied).

Do whatever you want, CCP. It's your game.

It would be nice, though, for those of us that care, to not keep things so close to your chest. Collectable items have much of their value based on how many are in the game. So keep it public when you hand them out and I'm fine with it.

I get that. I'm an anti-Themepark MMO player. But CCPs action doens't rise to the level of concern for me, even after analyzing the situation after sveral days of this "scandal". I understand that other people are different.

What I think irks me a bitt is the wiff on entitlement thinking, like somehow CCP has to tell everyone what it's doing or fit someone's arbitray idea of "fair" or "impartial". Not mad about it, but dissapointed is a good word.

Maybe it's me and I'm getting old, watching people freak out about monoclegate/incarna was fun, this time it's just kind of sad.

Well, to be fair, I don't feel as strongly either.

But I can't fault someone for how strong they may feel.

I absolutely rush home to login every day after work, but for some reason I cannot bring myself to tell CCP I "love" them.
