will it make any difference if i put the game on a Solid State drive or should i just put it on my normal Hard Drive.

It depends what you actually do, but I would recommend the SSD regardless.

SSD

Won't help with latency related issues tho.

I haven't had issues with Eve by using a HDD on my gaming rig, but a SSD would definitely help some load times and such. If you can afford it and aren't killing your space available too much by swapping to a SSD, go for it.

Everything works better on SSD, but I'm running EVE just fine with full settings on a regular HD.

OS (Win 7 Pro) on the *main* SSD. EVE and other software (e.g. Skyrim) on another SSD. Mechanical 1TB HDD for other stuff. A bit of overkill perhaps, but what the hell.

Most of what I write in terms of posts and/or comments is meant as "tongue-in-cheek", i.e. part irony, part sarcasm but meant in good fun.

On a more serious note. I want to marry CCP karkur. Is there a EVE dating service I can call?

I heard once that "Rooks and kings" have on their application to joining that they wont accept logistics/carrier who dont use an SSD

I am using an SSD for my operating system. HDD for everything else. Eve is stored on my HDD. But the swap files are so fast with the SSD it is like having 200 gigs of ram. You notice it with multiple clients running. Just make sure you have enough video card(s) to handle your multiple monitors.

If you don't know why are you buying an SSD? Just to tell us?

Eve doesn't particularly rely heavily on the hard drive, but I run an implementation both ways (motor HD on my main pc, SSD on my gaming notebook). The version of Eve on my SSD really is noticeably a little crisper and slightly more responsive, but not by a huge amount. About what I expected.

There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance.

I HIGHLY recommend SSD's. I never build a computer without one. They boot your computer up SUPER fast and it will load the EVE client faster as well, but you wont see any boost in game performance. Thats what the GPU's are for.

I forgot to add that EVE on an SSD is really nice when running a small mining op with 4+ accounts.

people still use platter drives? Shocked

ssd all the way man - it makes a massive difference.

Yes, they are indeed.

From a practical perspective, however, most apps don't realize the potential of a SSD beyond initialization. I think I can wait 10s more for my app to load and take the money I would have spent on a SSD and purchase a drive with a better $$/GB ratio. As for booting, hands down SSD is the way to go if you don't want to wait 60 whole seconds for your system to boot. For me, yes still on platters, this only needs to be done after power outages and the odd update requiring reboot. Otherwise, I just sleep the computer and whalaa! SSD boot speeds.

As for Eve, if you're not using resource caching, then yes, SSD will improve performance. But who doesn't have more than enough ram to enable resource caching......for multiple clients?

Here's how I imagine these conversations going in local:

anonymous freighter pilot: I just lost another freighter to Goons, how are they so fast?!
anonymous goon: Mittens buys us all gaming rigs with ssd's
anonymous freighter pilot: GRRR Goons!

Personally, I mainly use a very basic laptop with integrated video and I can still run multiple clients. Not well mind you. But I'm sure the next computers I get will all have ssd's. Even if it doesn't improve your performance for what you use it for right now, if you have the money and it may make sense within the expected time you will use the computer, why not? For PC's, I usually get something where you get the best bang for the buck- looking for best performance without paying ridiculous prices. Then I keep it longer than average, maybe upgrading the video card once before eventually gifting it to a friend or family member who needs a computer but can't afford one.

Running multiple clients on a 256G SSD...

Best spend ever.

Everything else can run of my normal HD... I don't need to run Office from my SSD so only my games and OS runs from on my SSD.

An SSD did nothing to improve load times for me, switching from gate to gate. My system is still limited by network latency and video card speed. I'm not routinely flying in fleets of hundreds of different ship classes, but then when it is a 200ms round trip for every packet ("ship #33 is type #24 with effect #37") it really doesn't matter whether the ship model can be loaded in 20ms or 5ms.

If you have a limited budget, your order of preference should be:

  1. video card texture memory to >2GB
  2. system memory to >4GB
  3. faster video card
  4. faster CPU
  5. faster HD
  6. lower latency Internet
  7. higher bandwidth Internet

Having a blindingly fast HD is going to be no use to you if your system spends all its time swapping to disk because you don't have enough video and system RAM to hold all the required textures.
