Pissing off its customers, it's very good at that.

I think complexity, freedom of choice and opportunity are what kept me here this long. There is so much to do, and so many ways to do it. I've also always been a fan of hard consequences, none of that pansy 'here's a cookie, try again' bullshit. I think I am more of a sci-fi fan because of Eve, rather than being a sci-fi fan before.

That said, I have done almost everything I have the enthusiasm to achieve. Now I just update my skill queue from time to time.

What would it take to replace Eve? That's a hard one. It would need to be all the things I love about Eve. A Sandbox with persistence, freedom of choice and all the rest of it. Lots of people are raving about Star Citizen. It looks great, and I am going to play it. But I'm sceptical that it could replace Eve for me.

That said, maybe I don't need to replace Eve. Maybe I could just abandoned it.

Community.

In all honesty, the community is what keeps me coming back for more. Podcasts, Meetups, forums, Blogs... If you have never gone to a meetup, I strongly urge you to look up your local chapter. You'll have instant friends. =)

Even the bad parts of the community, I still admire. That's what Eve did right, it created an environment that a community like ours could grow...

Interesting consensus seems to be building in the thread thus far

A: That the game itself is full of holes, but the stuff that goes on around the game is really great (community etc).
B: The sandbox nature of the game makes for interesting times.
C: PVP is a thrill as it has consequences not found in other games.

I would add to the above that Eve is a harsh mistress and does not forgive mistakes, making every choice meaningful. The fact that the game allows you to do numerous things and has a level of complexity that makes it thought provoking and engaging does it for me! That's why I am very anti the dumbing down trend seen of late.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Unparalleled longtime motivation, and we're talking years here, due to its more or less strict sandbox nature and emphasis on universal pvp, and of course the single shard. All of this is rather unique and leads to enormous levels of possibilities and metagaming.

Take away the broken promises, the hype, the "shinies" and Eve at its very core is a fun game. Whether this is due to the community at large that takes the tools and corrupts them into effects not originally gleamed (or intended) by CCP or those unknown and unnamed people at CCP working behind the scenes to keep this cesspool of dark human nature humming along. Also, the single shard aspect seems to be an open border for worldly affairs. That is, you can strike up a conversation with someone after an interaction in game and find out they are halfway around the world from you.

Goons do have a serious deal in this, no matter if you love or hate them. It doesn't really matter, and from an ingame point of view I despise them, but, hell, they GET this game.
Actually, it seems that it always comes down to the single shard concept. It just makes internet space pixels relevant.
I became obvious to me when there was this tournament with random teams (God, I can't even remember how the tourney was called). I mean, it's nice, but nobody really cares because you cannot relate to them. But get a CCP Alliance Tournament rolling, and hell, you get the name dropping, entities you know from the shard, and it MEANS something. That is so important and it makes you coming back, and I haven't found it anywhere else yet in an MMO.

1. Social aspect. It goes beyond some dudes you hang with and raid an NPC dungeon. You actively engage in group objectives versus other players.

2. Gain ground. I love the concept of conquest and Eve allows for many scales of conquest: small-scale lowsec turf wars, major nullsec engagements, turning a wormhole in a bastion of defense.

3. Playing the villain. I love how Eve allows and encourages all manner of criminal behaviour, such as scamming and piracy.

4. PVP is like chess. It's not as twitch based as most other multiplayer games, the smarter, more organized players win and not the ones that have been farming gold gear for 8 weeks straight.
