I agree, in the Legume section of a country show I over heard complaints about a French tourists comments concerning one of the category winners, all they said was 'What a mighty Pea, nice' and the grower punched them square in the face - totally uncalled for.

While this is sort of true, it doesn't change the social penalties for using the stigmatized form.
