Hi all,

Today I've once again found myself annoyed by a local channel full of Cyrillic symbols that after a run through Google Translate contained quite a bit of swearing, insulting and similar towards non Russian speakers. This only aggravated after I quite politely asked to take their discussion to a channel of their own language.

I don't mind that people speak their own language from time to time, and I think that the occasional sentence in a public channel isn't much of a problem, but with the current situation it's like I'm actually the one that ventured in some other language channel.

What i'm mostly irritated about is the fact that not only there is so much Russian (Or any other language if it was used in this way), but also that there's quite a bit of insulting, swearing etc. going on in it. Especially about / against non Russian speakers. Unwarranted already and as soon as a comment is given it skyrockets with profanities.

A lot of eve players (including me) are not native English speakers. Most of them don't mind, they either speak English as second language, try to speak it or go to a language specific channel. This forms an international community in the local channels and keeps things civilized.

With what I see now (and it doesn't matter if it's Russian, Chinese, Pig Latin or Klingonese) the whole idea of an International community get's lost and it's apparently ok to insult others as long as they don't understand what you're saying.

So, what I'd like to ask is for all you players that have had it up to their ears with this is to take matters into their own hands. Stay polite in the channels, but if that falls on deaf ears........ Well.. i believe this is a PvP game.....

I agree, smack talk and swear words aren't limited to language barriers. I speak English and I have been sworn at in English. This behavior is not limited to other languages talking to other language. I wouldn't even consider this a problem. In fact, why am I replying to a non problem?

@Lugalbandak (lol. Dutch sense of humour?) It's possible to report them, but there's a couple of drawbacks to that (aside from the fact that it's quite a bit of work to translate all those convo's and then send a petition) It's not gonna do much to stop it, and probably result in more irritation on both ends, second of all it's extra work for CCP that could also be spent developping the game.

prolly true , ive got a alliance chat filled with klingon ,(their prorn links are quit nice tho) but i just ignore it completly now days.

The Russians are fine. They have their own particular "sense of humor", but if they're on your side, you can't find any better allies. My experience, for instance, is that they're a whole lot less likely to **** you than Westerners, and they're very good at what they do. Don't beat them - join them.

It's not about the Russians in particular. It's the type of behaviour that is the problem. It's a group that is bashing another group with up to racist slander in public channels in a language that those "receiving" groups generally don't speak. If I would do this with all Dutch speakers it would be just the same and just as bad. It's just that the group that currently displays such behaviour is a group of Russian speakers. And they are also thereby causing some people to think badly of the Russians and Russian speakers that don't display this type of behaviour.

I was told EVE was a dark, and harsh universe, but in my time here I've noticed everyone has feelings that get destroyed with the slightest change in wind direction.

Jim, I'm minmatar... I fly a silly sailboat... of course I get upset if there's a change in wind direction.

But... to be serious. You are right about this being a grimy, harsh and dark universe. That's what makes the game worth playing. There is a difference between playing the game and out of game vileness though. If you get ganked or held for ransom, it's part of the game and it's mechanics. If you use it's public chatboxes to spew bile about others that has nothing to do with the game or it's setting. Especially when you cowardly and childishly do it in a language that only your group understands. For as far as I know the game does not have any currently living ethnicities, races or groups named in their engine.

There is a line where it's all fun and games, but if you go beyond that line it should be adressed and stopped. We do play this game because it's fun. Let's keep it funny.
