What happens if someone fills an order of yours and you don't have the isk to cover?

It won't fill what they can afford to fill? (order has a minimum volume)

If they can afford to fill the order, it will fill the portion of the order they can afford that fits the parameters of the order.

Order: 10k items at 1m ISK, min 5000
Wallet+Escrow=4b ISK

If you try selling 5000 items at 1m ISK each, the transaction will fail (5b needed to cover, 4b available) and nothing will change hands.
If you try selling 4000 items at 1m ISK each, your order won't match the buy order, so you'll end up with an open sell order.
If you try selling 5000 items at 800k ISK each, the transaction will complete successfully (4b needed to cover, 4b available) (this is the basic premise behind draining escrow) and money and goods will change hands.

Okay, so let's say you have isk to cover 2 items. You set a minimum quantity of 3. If you cannot afford all three, it will cancel the order (this is called the margin trading scam, look it up).

Yeah happy I asked MD before making any moves, I figured it was but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks for all the responses.

In situations where the order is cancelled, your broker fees are forfeited and you suffer no additional consequences.

NEW QUESTION

Do you traders usually over-extend your escrow above what you have available in your wallet?

I'm working with things that don't normally fill all at once so right now I am about 1.4b short of what I would need.

Just something I thought about while bored drinking mah coffee.

Depends on how fast moving the stuff I'm buying is. If itis a fast market I try not to so I don't lose orders from insufficient funds. If it is a slow one, then yeah, just to keep things moving.

I'm trading in jita so it is a constant war of course, only time I feel like I could be in trouble is when the servers sitting around 40-46k players, jita is so active then.

I usually sit on a reserve of about 1b in the wallet with anywhere from 2.5-3.5b in buy orders.

But that's spread through a lot of different items. Mostly slow moving but high margins 30-100%.

If I didn't owe money I would definitely move out of jita lol

You might find Amarr, Dodoxie, Rens or Hek to be more to your liking. They are like Jita lite.

I absolutely overextend, and I trade mostly in low-medium margin medium-high turnover items (both ones with stable prices and others with wildly fluctuating prices).

It's not uncommon for me to have 6-10b in buy orders at once of which I could only cover half. My buy orders get 0.01 isked faster than they get filled.

Yeah I don't really mind jita too much, I just layer items that move decently with high margins.

It's just once I have a capital higher than 10b I will probably move out of jita that way I can be more passive and do other things :)

Might start training for freighters, idk still new to trading ;P

I will not train freighters until public courier contractors start charging a lot more.

Makes much more sense to pay a pittance and outsource both the effort and the risk to a useful idiot rather than to do it myself.

I have (and use) several freighters, but I also use Red Frog for my regular routes, its way too cheap to not use them :)
