Drone management

Can anyone offer advice for controlling drones in plexes? I use a Gila, and the dps is terrific, but keeping them alive is not. If I use light drones, and they gain aggro, I usually lose one bringing them back in. Sentries aren't too bad, other than managing my range to scoop them if they gain aggro. This is made difficult by having to speed tank around a center point.

I am really new to using drones for anything more than light supplemental damage, so any advice for managing them as a main weapon system would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any constructive advice.

Drop your sentries and orbit them. You could also fit a shield RR and keep them alive.

Well I use an Ishtar and suggest you train for those instead, speed and tracking bonuses are godly as is the tank.

I don't use lights at all. Well I do but I only pop them out, usually after abandoning my heavies as a form of WCS. Soon as you release them it seems any elite frigs will drop points and target them instantly lol letting you escape.

I use Ogres for killing frigs and my auto cannons. Reason being that 90% of the time everything will ignore them and while they miss a fair bit at least they're not constantly returning, dying or travelling to targets every 2 seconds because of the ******** AI.

Wow... just--- wow. Ogres to go after frigates, and no big deal if they miss constantly, cuz that's better than "dying constantly". You really don't know how to use drones, so please stop using them.

This post has gotta be the most amazing thing I've read in several months...

Actually you only proved that you are an idiot. With the Ishtar's bonuses, Ogres can easily track frigate NPCs and instapop most of them. In fact, in my experiences other than rogue drone frigs, unbonused ogres can kill most frigate NPCs..... Herpderp

I used to do that at times in missions long ago with a navy domi.

When the frigates are at a bit of range, they come in with a 0 trans so almost anything can pop them. If they get in too close, you'll probably need lighter drones to take them out but not if they are at any kind of range from a heavy drone. It's really not that bad nor that big a deal.

You are probably right, and it is not a big deal.

Since I hate micromanaging things, I just avoid this sort of situations. These days I pack either sentries or light scouts, and salvage drones. I don't even bother with medium scouts anymore, and I never used heavy scouts.

Like you said, the whole thing is not a big deal, but the amount of micromanagement, the tactics to protect the drones, it is just not my thing, so I avoid the whole issue. I just kill small stuff at range with sentries while they are, like you pointed out, try to close down on me and have 0 transversal.

I might suggest you go and look back at drones and the ish. They don't call it the afktar for nothing.

The heavies one and two shot the elite frigs in nul anoms. And if you let the agro start on the cruiser, orbit object (doesn't much mater which one as long as it doesn't go away) turn on the 100mn burner and drop heavies. If you 'miss time' the agro then you have to target one ship and sick drone on it. Then come back in 20min to pull drones and move to next anom.

Instant 50m+/hr with respectable drone skill

Warping your Ishtar into the last room of Serp Prison you get quad webbed by towers then webbed and scrammed by a bunch of elite frigs. Pop your lights out the get insta popped, I drop my sentries, pop the stasis towers at 50km, pop the ogres out they wtf-pwn the elites. And year after that orbit a battleship n AFK. Its not fiction I do it all the time.

There's no ability to snipe them from range with sentries.
