Is Salvage Random?

Hi,

Im in a heated discussion regarding salvage and salvaging.

It is my belief that salvage is determined when the wreck is created. The salvaging skill and equipment does NOT affect what loot is salvaged.

Is this correct?

Now, I have searched, and found most say this is true. But I could not find a topic in the forum that has a CCP badge on it regarding this.

Could I please have a CCP person confirm or deny this?

Thank you,

CCP generally won't answer questions about things like this, many game mechanics are kept secret and even CCP doesn't understand their archaic code sometimes.

The reason people know salvage isn't based on skills is because there's many OCD spreadsheet wielders that completed hundreds or thousands of missions collecting data on their drops over months and years and some of the data compares different skill level salvagers. This was way more important when salvage was worth a lot more. Also, if a level 5 salvager got 500% more salvage than a level 1 it would be very obvious.

I don't need CCP. Salvage is random and has nothing to do with salvaging skill.

Also don't expect CCP to come running every time you have a question. Especially one that HAS been discussed to death already.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

I personally think it's determined at the point when success or failure is determined, but it really is of no consequence other than mental masturbation. From my experience there is different salvage for different factions (like Angels vs Guristas vs Drones), but aside from that, the only restriction I can see is quantity for hull wreck size.

I doubt salvage is determined when the wreck is created, but long experience has shown salvage skill only matters for chance of salvaging, and what you can salvage. The only downside of a low salvage skill is overall speed of salvaging. Also I believe numerous people has tracked their salvaging results enough to prove this.

it would make more sense for the salvage to be determined at the end of the salvager cycle, keeping thousands potential salvage yields in the server at any given time in case somebody bothers to actually salvage them isn't exactly economical.
