Ship to learn PvP in?

I recently returned to eve after a 2 year break. I only played for a few months and never really got into the game before. I'm giving it another go since I never got to try PvP last time I played. I have some basic support skills, and am looking for a good starter PvP frig. I have Amarr skills trained the furthest (armor tank skills, amarr frig 4, small energy turrets, etc) but am willing to train into another races weapons/ships if necessary.

Basically i'd like a good ship to learn to PvP in, something that will allow me to dictate the terms of the fight. I generally play to win, once I engage I don't plan on running, for better or worse, I just want to learn. I have been trying to learn in a Punisher up until this point but so far i've been blown to smithereens 3 times, twice by cruisers and once by what I think was a frig, but it was over so fast that I don't really know. I finally found some targets my own size but they ran away before I could even get into scram range.

Also I could use some advice on Where to PvP. All the low sec areas I go to seems to have at most 1 person in them, who is usually docked in a station.

Any advice on what ship I should be using would be helpful. I generally like things that are fast and pack a punch. If the fight is over before the other guy even knows what happened that would be my preferred fighting style. Long or short range doesn't matter as much to me. Though I'd rather go for speed and electronic warfare (not getting hit at all) instead of a huge tank that just soaks up all the damage.

You`re lucky. Agony Unleashed, a renowned PvP corporation is hosting an open pvp basic class this weekend. Further details can be found in the following link

As for ships, I would continue with frigates for the time being. When starting out you can expect to lose a LOT of ships and frigs are the cheapest to replace. The punisher is the epitome of a brick tank, as far as t1 frigs are concerned. In general Amarr ships are slower and tankier, and that's what the punisher is designed for. If you want something faster that you can kite with, you could give the Executioner a try. It's a pretty decent kiter using scorch and much faster than the punisher.

Alternatively you could train into a different race of frigates. Minmatar in general has the fastest ships, since you mentioned you prefer that style of combat. If you stick with Amarr a lot of the larger ship classes will also be the same "brick tank" style as the punisher so it may be worth your while to cross train early if that doesn't appeal to you.

This website has excellent descriptions of the advantages/disadvantages of the t1 frigates (as well as most other ships) and is a great tool for the beginning PvPer.

To find fights, go to factional warfare space in low-sec and hang out in the novice plexes, as they limit the ships to frigates. You MIGHT find some fair fights, but it's also pretty common to go up against off-grid boosters and blobs so expect to lose some ships. You could also join a PvP corp like Brave Noobies or RvB to get some experience with fleets, or just more targets to shoot at 1v1.

That website was very helpful, thank you. The slasher is looking very attractive to me.

That PvP class looks really interesting to me, and a lot of fun. Unfortunately I will not be home this weekend. Is that a class that is run semi-regularly or just a one time thing? I would love to enroll at a future date if possible.

the basic class is run semi-regularly but not in the sense of "every 2nd weekend". Join the mailing list " Agony PVP UNI " * and you will get a mail for every class that is coming up.

* IIRC that is the mailing list, I will check and edit if incorrect

We continue to aim for running a PVP-BASIC class once a month, rotating through the various time zones as much as possible.
Although some of these classes are reserved for certain corps (there was a RvB class and a Brave Newbies class), some will be in other time zones, sometimes there's more than a month between classes. So expect the next one that will be available in a convenient time zone for you in 4-6 months. (But you can always wake up at 4 am to attend one in a different time zone ;) )

You can watch their forum for announcements and there's also an in-game mailing list that you can subscribe to.

And I also highly recommend their class, it's very useful and the roam is great fun.

Hi. Your best bet for enjoying the game is to find people to play with. Eve Uni, Brave Newbies, and Red vs Blue are all very newbie friendly and will give you people to PvP with.

For ships, I really like Merlins for very low SP players. They are easy to fly, don't take T2 guns to be ok, and can be either a tough little tackler or a vicious little brawler. Fit MWD, Scram, web, MSE across the mids, a DCU in the lows with some speed mods and you're good to go.

If you want to try soloing, switch the MWD for an afterburner, slap a couple damage mods in the lows and some blasters in the highs with Caldari Navy Antimatter and you're good to go. In every case you want to get very close to the enemy, so its pretty easy to pilot. You won't turn into a solo pvp god with low sp and no experience, but you can burn in and orbit at 500 and at least be half decent.

E:For finding people take a look at this website: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/

You can study where kills are happening or look for traffic with jumps/hour or jumps/day. You can also look for belt or anom ratters by looking at npc kills.

Go straight for a Thrasher. They're not much more expensive than frigates, handle about the same, give you more tank and fitting options, and will set you up for the Sabre, which is one of the most fun ships in the game.

In fact it's not very important what you fly at start, try a bit of everything.
What's important is not to fly passively what the vets say, but to try and analyze by yourself : That way you will understand why they fly this or that, how they fit it, and you will even be able to determinate by yourself what fits the best to your style.

Well i've been flying around in some slashers the last few days and it's been fun. Got into some FW and lost a bunch of ships. It started with me dying without doing any damage at all, but i've since improved.

Got into a fight with a punisher but he had a friend show up in an incursus. Managed to live for about 90 whole seconds, they weren't putting out a lot of damage, but I couldn't break the tank on the punisher. Should have switched to the incursus I think, or carry an extra ammo type with me. Lesson learned.

Also survived my first fight. realized with such a fast ship I can control range and flee if need be. I ended up switching out my tracking disruptor for a web since I was getting destroyed by webs since speed is my best defense it seems.

Unfortunately I am running out of money fast so I guess i'll be taking a break to run more missions until I can learn to win and make some money that way.
