Sneezing: Why it's great!

Hullo, i thought i would tell you about that body function called sneezing and say to you about its many awesome qualities.

PROSSmile

1: Sneezing makes all the hairs on your body stand on end and you get a wonderful tingling sensation, this alone would be enough for me to proclaim sneezing as amazing.

2: During or slightly after a good sneeze you are granted an opportunity to make the loudest, most silly noise you can think of and no-one will complain or make rude remarks, in fact often people will praise you for it. (see below)

3: Often after sneezing in public you seem to be suddenly venerated like a kind of religious icon, people who have never met you before suddenly start blessing you and giving you praise.

CONSSad

1: Carrying drinks can be tricky at the best of times, now throw in a good hard sneeze into the mix and suddenly it's like some dastardly gameshow challenge, many beginners will be caught out sending liquid flying.

2: Like above, the enjoyment of sneezing can be ruined by the sudden jerking movements caused by the event leading to one of the most common injuries... Head butting tables, walls, desks. I myself although an experienced sneezer have had my pleasure foiled by cracking my forehead rapidly against my computer desk thoroughly spoiling the fun.

3: Expelling snot whilst sneezing whilst it does not take any enjoyment away from the actual sneeze sensation itself (often it enhances it) It can sometimes cause those around you to react completely the opposite to the previous "PRO 3" scenario, resulting in hurt feelings and potential slipping accidents. Even if you managed to guard passers by from said mucous you are often left with a rather stubborn mess to deal with. This of course can be fixed by using a hanky or piece of tissue, but sneezes can be stealthy and blast out before you are prepared.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my review of one of the body's best functions and afterwards plan to sneeze more often.

I sneeze at least twice a day. Usually rather violently, after eating something my nostrils don't agree with, strangely enough.

The neurological aspects of sneezing that relate it almost directly to orgasms certainly makes this an awkward conversation.

I found out about 5 years ago that I actually have what used to be called a Sun Allergy. It's when one starts sneezing when exposed to suddenly bright sunshine, usually in the early mornings. It would happen all the time when my mother would drive me to school and was a bit of a family joke.

Turns out about 2% of the population has this, and it is call Photo-Reactive Respiratory Response. So there. Big smile

edit: We used to have a really cavernous living room when I was growing up and my dad's sneeze was, I swear, loud enough in there to make your ears ring afterwards !

I have that too. I've read that a combination of bright sunlight and a breeze blowing on you triggers it more often. So a trip to the beach can cause a really serious sneezing.

Another con for the list is sneezing while driving. For a second there all sensors are damped and you're oblivious to what's going on in traffic.

Sneezing trivia: The people of Yap, Micronesia sneeze when they're drunk. If you sneeze there, people don't say "Bless you." They say "Are you drunk?"

Awesome and very informative read, OP, thank you very much.
Can we expect this to be the first part of an ongoing mini-series about the Top 10 most popular body functions of all times?
Can you do belching next?

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I hadn't planned on doing that, as sneezing is my only real true passion.

But that is a very good idea, i would look forward to reading about other less-sneeze orientated bodily functions.

Perhaps someone else with more experience in burping can write the article.

Pro 4. You can retain a sneeze momentarily by making faces at whoever you happen to be talking to at the moment. As a added bonus they think you are now funny.

Con 4. The Hic-Sneeze. Yes, when hiccups and sneezes combine it is not a pleasant experience.

Holding the sneeze whilst sometimes elongating the experience can more often than not backfire leaving you entirely sneeze-less. I would only recommend this practice to advanced sneezers.

This is a rare occurrence, so i thought it best not to include it as to avoid putting of those looking to get more into sneezing.

Thankyou for your input and interest in sternutation

Con 5. A violent sneeze can cause momentary incontinence.

And according to goaskalice.columbia.edu, you should never hold in a sneeze. Because "You could potentially burst a blood vessel, fracture your nose, force air under your skin, or damage your sinuses or middle ear." Holy crap, sneeze air forced under the skin. I wonder how you get that problem fixed? Is it something you just have to live with forever? But Columbia University's site says it can happen, so it must be true. Right?.

It's not all sunlight all the time that triggers the response. It rarely happens to me once the sun is overhead. But really bright reflective concrete sidewalks can do it.

I used to walk 8 blocks from my apartment in San Fran down to Market Street which meant walking 5 blocks of absolutely hugely paved plazas of concrete at the Civic Center. Sometimes my eyes would start tearing up (without sneezing) so bad that I would have to stop and duck into the darkened lobby of the Asian Art Museum for 5 minutes until I could actually see properly again.

That's never happened before or since, but they have to be related.

I don't think I could. I'd probably shart my pants and throw up in the process.

8. Sunshine may make you sneeze. "Bright sunlight causes one out of three people to sneeze," Wood says. "The light sneezers are called 'photics,' from the Greek meaning ‘of light.' And in fact, light sensitivity is an inherited trait -- just one more thing we can blame on our parents."

And here is more odd facts about sneezing Big smile

Why do drugs when you can sneeze?, it's way cheaper and not so addictive.
You can pass drug tests and drive after sneezing, there has yet to be a case where the cops have pulled people over for sneezing and driving.

....but I'm sure someone somewhere has caused a horrific traffic catastrophe and deaths caused by involuntary, inappropriate muscular convulsions during a sneeze.
