Shoot and kill them, and usually their family sues you for wrongful death.

Things will not go well for you at trial at all.

Depends on which state you're in. If you're in a 'castle doctrine' state, that's all exactly incorrect. In a caste doctrine state, once they cross the line into your house or legal domicile, you could basically kill them with an anti-tank missile, and you'd still be within your rights (presuming you have the necessary NFA paperwork for the rocket. Which you CAN get.). AND the intruder's family gets nothing but cold shoulder - A bone fide case of castle doctrine defense is a straight-up get-out-of-jail-free card.

Just like to point out, having fired Javelins before, you'd need a REALLY high ceiling for that to work. P

Anyone who can afford a Javelin probably has a mansion that makes South Fork look a bit... Shabby. Lol

OTOH, an AT-4 or Carl Gustav would work in a decent hallway. Might be a bit hard on the paint, mind you...

Be more useful to issue a warning to stay out of US medical facilities - ~120K preventable fatalities per year in those.

Having worked in 3 different hospitals administratively, including 3 years in the Quality Management department of one of them, the big secret about most of those accidents and deaths is they are caused by bad handwriting of the MD's.

Just a frightening number of them. One would think it is a cliche but it is not. Medication errors and all that..........it's just difficult to decipher their almost coded scribbles sometimes, and especially in a crisis sometimes there just is not time to verify things with them or they are just gone.

Seriously, misdiagnoses and treatment and medication errors cause most of the deaths and most of those are just cases of having to 'guess' at scribbled instructions.

Our Risk Manager would just take a look at the boxes of evidence coming in for an incident and she knew right away whether the patient's family or whoever would be able to win on a malpractice suit or not, just right off the bat. That's why most of them are settled out of court as it sometimes is just so obvious with what went wrong.

And it doesn't matter how many edicts and memos and government requirements came down the pike urging MD's about handwriting, I never ever saw it get any better.

Seriously frightening stuff. And stupid.

Having worked as an IT consultant trying to combat the problem, I agree. And even when you come up with a technological solution that is easy to use and is completely efficacious, the resistance the physicians put up is ferocious - and they get their way. Never saw a bigger bunch of prima donnas in my life.

To be fair, they weren't all that way. One particularly arrogant doc was getting on my nerves, and I pointed out to him that there were two people in the room, and only one of those people had relevant skills. To his credit, he got a thoughtful look on his face, and shut up.

The defunct car company or the weapons manufacturer? P

And dont get me started on Japanese doctors... oh my good god.

anyway, we're getting off topic.

This is about shooting home invaders and pants on head laws.

You both should hear all the insane stories in the UK of people tying up thieves etc who break into their houses and then being sued.

Or my fave, couple years ago guy broke into a house and cut his hand on the window he smashed. Sued the owner for having old windows.

Either. Lol

Yeah, well, anytime lawyers get involved, you can be sure they'll find a way to twist reality until they get paid. Sometimes their clients get paid, too.

It came up during a presentation this week on some Billionaire who wants to fund and build a City on the Ocean sort-of-thing.

William Gibson Tweeted about it and someone responded with:

James Erwin ‏@jlerwin 23 Sep

@academicdave @GreatDismal There is zero hope for these guys. 1982 UN Law of the Sea clearly prohibits seasteading.

Which I then Googled and verified.

Just fortunate timing.

Does the UN have a PETA-like branch or something? Because that is the only thing I can think of that would make them prohibit that.

Gee, I can think of a million, starting with preventing dictators from gaining immunity by moving 'things' offshore.

3 men in a dinghy would account for about 1/2 of the RN's current combat capability Evil

Didn't the RN already try that on with the Cod Wars? IIRC, it' was even honors all around, until the Icelandics cheated and brought diplomats to the game. Icelandic victory on points.

Hence the round 2.

They have no diplomatic clout now since the EU is mad at them. Twisted
