I've never played EVE before. It was my first time few days ago, so apologies for any mistakes.

While trying to figure out what should I do in EVE, what suits me better, I've decided to be an explorer.

Firstly, I watched some videos on the topic:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=x9HZJzxU8sw&feature=youtu.be
and read this
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Exploration_guide

Where were some more stuff but it was in Russian language so can't be at a good use here (it was a series of video guides about EVE - http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1981757)

So, We got only one tutorial for the starters on the matter of exploration. It will reveal some basics but where were some points to be focused on.

1. What do we do here.
As an explorers we are trying to find special places called Relic sites and Data sites. Ones you found them (see scan guides https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Apocrypha_probing) you will see few sealed cans to be opened. In Data sites use your Data Analyzer module to hack them and in Relic sites use Relic Analyzer module to hack them.

This involves playing a mini game, and once you have completed this game, another smaller container will pop out of the container you're hacking into. You simply need to left-click on this container to obtain the items, but note, the container is only in space for a short period.

And it will be dragged to you ship only if it is less then 3000m to it. Just click it once, one container at a time. Double-click on the container to make you ship start going towards the container if it flew far.

You got two attempts to hack containers, after second failure it will blowup.
Best part - no NPC in Relic and Data Sites.

2. Scan
Please, see scan guides https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Apocrypha_probing

3. Skill training
Below I will give some skill required for success exploration but it is for references only, you can make it your way.
So, as for explorers we are primarily should be interested in Scanning and Science skills. But there are some moments to be taken into consideration.
Scanning Skills:

Archaeology (Proficiency at identifying and analyzing ancient artifacts. Required skill for the use of Relic Analyzer modules. Gives +10 Virus Coherence per level). Train it at least to 4 to be able to easily hack containers in 0.0 - 0.3 systems. Needed to be able to hack Relic site containers with the use of your Relic Analyzer module.

Also this skill is required for Sleeper Technology, Takmahl Technology, Yan jung Technology, Talocan Technology. These are not need now, but could do in the future if you want to do science and invent.

Hacking (Proficiency at breaking into guarded computer systems. Required skill for the use of Data Analyzer modules. Gives +10 Virus Coherence per level). Train it at least to 4 to be able to easily hack containers in 0.0 - 0.3 systems. Needed to be able to hack Data site containers with the use of your Data Analyzer module.

Also this skill is required for Caldari Encryption Methods, Minmatar Encryption Methods, Amarr Encryption Methods, Gallente Encryption Methods. These are not need now, but could do in the future if you want to do science and invent.

Astrometrics (Skill at operating long range scanners. +5% scan strength per level. -5% max scan deviation per level. -5% scan probe scan time per level). Train it to level 4. Needed for Astrometrics Acquisition (Level 3) and Astrometrics Pinpointing (level 4).

Astrometrics Acquisition (Skill at the advanced operation of long range scanners. 5% reduction in scan probe scan time per level). Train it to level 2 and you will be able to use Scan Acquisition Array I (Reduces the scan time of scan probes). Higher - better.

Astrometrics Rangefinding (Skill for the advanced operation of long range scanners. 5% increase to scan probe strength per level). Train it to level 2 and you will be able to use Scan Rangefinding Array I (ncreases the scan strength when scanning with scan probes). Higher - better.

Astrometrics Pinpointing (Greater accuracy in hunting down targets found through scanning. Reduces maximum scan deviation by 5% per level). Train it to level 2 and you will be able to use Scan Pinpointing Array I (Reduces the scan deviation when scanning with scan probes). Higher - better.

Survey (Skill at operating ship, cargo and survey scanners. 5% improvement per level in the scan speeds of those module types). Needed for Archaeology and Salvaging. Need to be at least at level 3.

Science Skills:
Science (Basic understanding of scientific principles. 5% Bonus to blueprint copying speed per level). This one needed for Archaeology and useful in the future also. Need to be at least at level 3.

Targeting:
Signature Analysis (Skill at operating Targeting systems. 5% improved targeting speed per skill level). Does not affect other required skills but useful itself.

Not much.
But, to be able to learn them you should already learn some other skills from Engineering and Navigation. Also Engineering and Navigation Skills are very important to you as your ship will have very low Capacitor capacity level and not very good agility.

This is what I was going to stress your attention on!

While flying on Heron (Caldari) or same level vessel at the start your agility is not so high and you risk losing valuable containers after successfully hacking Relic or Data Sites if they flew far then 3000m. Also you will be very simple target for anyone who wants to kill you (lower than 0.5 systems), you will not be able to start moving or change direction fast so pirates will kill you on the run.

Also you should consider learning some skills to improve you capacitor capacity and related skills. It is needed to be able to turn on Afterburner and Microwarpdrive ...

... and fly away from Warp Disruptor lock. It is the only way to stay alive on small ship.

Don't even take weapons on board of your ship (talking about Heron level ships) - no use at allUgh

After improving your agility and capacitor you should think about improving your shield skills. Be able to take more damage, stay alive longer - warp awayP

Below are some of the skills:
Capacitor

Capacitor Management (Skill at regulating your ship's overall energy capacity. 5% bonus to capacitor capacity per skill level). Energy is life. Level 3 at least.

Capacitor Systems Operations (Skill at operating your ship's capacitor, including the use of capacitor boosters and other basic energy modules. 5% reduction in capacitor recharge time per skill level).

CPU management (Basic understanding of spaceship sensory and computer systems. 5% Bonus to ship CPU output per skill level). Needed for Survey and Signature Analysis. Do it at level 2 it will be ok for the start.

Electronics Upgrades (Skill at installing electronic upgrades, such as signal amplifiers, co-processors and backup sensor arrays. 5% reduction of CPU needs for all modules requiring Electronics Upgrades per skill level). At least at level 3 (for Hacking) but better at level 5 (for Cover Ops).

Energy Grid Upgrades (Skill at installing power upgrades e.g. capacitor battery and power diagnostic units. 5% reduction in CPU needs of modules requiring Energy Grid Upgrades per skill level).

Power Grid Management (Basic understanding of spaceship energy grid systems. 5% Bonus to ship's power grid output per skill level). Level 3 will be Ok (needed for Capacitor Management).

Agility

Acceleration Control (Skill at efficiently using Afterburners and MicroWarpdrives. 5% Bonus to Afterburner and MicroWarpdrive speed boost per skill level).

Afterburner (Skill at using afterburners. 5% reduction to Afterburner duration and 10% reduction in Afterburner capacitor use per skill level).

Evasive Maneuvering (Improved skill at efficiently turning and accelerating a spaceship. 5% improved ship agility for all ships per skill level).

High Speed Maneuvering (Skill at using MicroWarpdrives. 5% reduction in MicroWarpdrive capacitor usage per skill level).
Navigation (Skill at regulating the power output of ship thrusters. 5% bonus to sub-warp ship velocity per skill level).
Warp Drive Operation (Skill at managing warp drive efficiency. Each skill level reduces the capacitor need of initiating warp by 10%).

Shield skills.
I will give only one. but on this level of skill learning you should be able to manage it yourself.
Shield Management (Skill at regulating a spaceship's shield systems. 5% bonus to shield capacity per skill level). Useful not to die at once while trying to warp out of pirate sight.

Also very good help in planning your skill learning you can find in Certification Planner. (use Alt-A to open your Character Sheet, 2nd inset under Skills). Give attention to navigation, core and defense certificates.

I hope this small guide will help you to find your way in exploration from the begging.

4. Fitting

As we just started playing we will have small ship yet with some skill bonus for scan strength of probes and Salvager cycle time as well as Role Bonus: +5 Virus Strength to Relic and Data Analyzers.

But properly fitted it will give you all it have.

I will say some only for Heron (but I think it could be used as well on other ships)

High slots: We got 3. I just put Core Probe Launcher here and 2 slots got free.

Med Slots: We got 5. you can choose yourself between: Cargo Scanner, Relic Analyzer module, Data Analyzer module, Afterburner, Microwarpdrive, Scan *** Arrays.

Low slots: We got 2. I got 2 Warp Core Stabilizers there. (Update: no, no more Stabs... It is to hard to scan any with 2 of them installed)

Rigs: Need Jury Rigging Level 1 and Mechanics Level 3 to be able to put something.

Calibration point of your ship is 400. I've managed to put only 2 rigs in but it depends on the rig. See the info on the rig.
Mine are Small Emission Scope Sharpeners.

Also don't forget to put some implants into your had)) Slot 2 and Slot 4 (memory and intelligent). It will shorten the time of learning.

5. Shopping
Go to Jita.

By this time you should have some money to be able to buy things you want to (of cause if you were flying and hacking sites)
Do buy some Herons (or same for your race) for the future because this ship is really easy to destroy. Be prepared to be destroyedPirate
Buy all the stuff that you need to fit ALL your SHIPS. It will help you to safe time in the future.

Mind that if you peace out all your implants will be lost also.

6. Recommendations

Fly in 0.6-0.3 systems for the first few days of active flying. You will gather enough money for the future destructions and expenses.
Fly after server reload - more Sites for you less people to kill you.

Always be on the run, don't stop. Orbit near your target. Warp to stations in the system.

Go to the systems with the lower amount of pilots - you should adjust your World Map Control Panel/Star Map/Statistics.

UPDATE: 0.5 level system 4 Relic Sites in one system gives your something about 4-5 mill. not much but ok for tea.

Good luck!
P.S. Will be thankful for any recomendations!

Site respawns are NOT tied to downtime. They respawn elsewhere once completed

Normally, sites despawn (and then respawn elsewhere) once completed. Occasionally a site will be bugged, though, or checked and not completeted, so a site will also despawn at the next downtime starting 72 hours after the first person warps into the plex.

Fit a cargo scanner in one of the free high slots to check the cans for any specific loot you want to get Smile

I disagree

Very good guide for new explorers like me. Do you frequently go into low sec without a cloak? I went to low sec 2 times to explore and got killed. First time was a gate camp, then i learned to use the statistics tabs on the star map. Second time someone scanned me down while I was in a data site. I don't know how to counter someone scanning me down in a data site since cloak wont allow data/relic analyzers to work.

I don't use cloak at all. 2 reasons: trial account ^-^ and you can't do any on site with turned on cloak (also if you are nearer then 2000m to any object it will auto decloak you)
Lowsecs r funny, some times nobody is in, just fly around and take what you want, but some times - to many people (gate camp arrrrr!!!Pirate) and that is the reason why I do train agility now - run away if someone got me scaned and came to see me at the spot)))))

Poteque 'Prospector' Environmental Analysis EY-1005

Very worthwhile implant if you do a lot of exploring... specifically the "5 second increase to decay time of all scattered containers".
