Looking for other games...

So, I'm not very up-to-date when it comes to games I have a hard time finding much interest most of the time then I do and kinda cloister myself into it What?

I've started with Counterstrike back in 1999, then moved to Tribes 2 where I had a lot of fun for a good year, fiddled with various solo games like Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Oni, Unreal, UT, then had a few years break. When I eventually invested again in a gaming-capable rig, I started playing a bit of Crysis, Portal, Mirror Edge, but for the most, these are rather short and kind of lack replayability. On the other hand, I've spent countless hours in Dragon Age 1, Mass Effect 1&2 but slowly lost it when Bioware released DA2, then ME3. Along those, I have spent hours on EVE, enjoyed Deus Ex HR, Fallout NV, I tried TES Oblivion but never really made it past the tutorials.

I kinda feel like I need something else on the side and tried various other MMOs without really finding a really good one.

I kind of liked Path of Exile (it's silly but whacking monsters by the dozens is utterly satisfying), it's free and can be played without being forced into the build of the month and only doing the same combo ever but now I know you have to replay the game 3 times to reach the end pretty much killed the interest for me. In a rather similar way, I tried SWTOR, Aion, but they seem to pretty much promote build of the month and combo spam, which I know will completely kill my interest in less than a week.

So here I am, not really sure what to look at, it feels like most games are either combo/build and most of the time Hero-Fi, or lack a very deep universe and make you go through the same things multiple time just nudging the difficulty up, wich doesn't really renew the interest for me. A good while ago, I remember a video I saw on youtube, some sort of wicked Hero-Fi game, the player completed a quest and got rewarded with a foursome, I didn't note the name at the time, but the nasty or wicked humour can be a selling point too.

So here's the question: What games would you suggest? (I hate asking for it, but when I browse steam store or websites, the videos and screenshots really don't depict the games correctly for my taste)

If you can tell us what kind of genres you like, it would be easier.

That's a problem with broad tastes, I've found interesting action-rpgs, well made FPS, stimulating strategy games, thrilling stealth games, I have loved medieval-fantasy games and sci-fi games.
The MMOs I tried usually ended up unplayable if you don't follow some specific builds or turned into a pure grind fest.
Many solo-games have a short life-span because they lack depth or have been rushed out and lack replayability.

How is it pretty good? that goes against what I've heard of it.

Dark Souls did catch my interest a while back, then I forgot about it, will have a look at it again.
Dota didn't on the other hand, I'll have to check out the others.

I came across Outlast some time ago, seems like an interesting one too.

Have you tried Kindoms of Amalur: Reckoning? I found it a decent length play. with decent replayability.

Also I would recommend the elder scrolls series. The tutorials put alot of people off, it did me at first. But those games have amazing depth, and are modable for extra playability.

I will try the demo of Kingdoms of Amalur, hadn't spotted it.
With TES, it's a frustrating story somehow, I tried many times and always failed to build a character that can actually do something. I know that properly chosing main and secondary skills is a key point of the game, but I somehow fail everytime. I said I never made it past the tutorials, but it's pretty close, since it never took me very long after it to start struggling from a bad choice in my builds, so it sits there, in my library and looks at me weird.

Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls) is definitely worth taking a look at. Having beaten both games I can tell you it's one of those games that give you a good challenge and it feels very rewarding when you finally manage to crawl to the end.

I haven't played the PC version and I've heard the controls are a bit funny on PC, so if you have access to a ps3 you might want to play the ps3 version instead.

Another good and quite obvious game at the moment is Grand Theft Auto V. It's really well made in every way, the story and characters are well written and the whole thing is just extremely fun.

The Elder Scrolls 1-5
Crusader Kings II

TES are kind of sandboxy and offer a reasonable amount of replayability
There is a lot of Lore and ingame history to find and discover.

CK2 is a nice but slow paced game, and it can get tricky balancing Empire building/maintaining with your Dynasty success.
There is also a Game of Thrones mod for it too ..

Skyrim - The mods make this still one of the best games out there.

Rome II - Dispite some issues its a solid game.

Farcry 3 Blood Dragon - A great shot of the 80s directly to the brain.

Saint's Row The Third

Absolute batshit insanity. Take GTA and instead of serious dullness, go the exact opposite and you have Saint's Row.

Since you liked DA:O, maybe you'd also like to go with something older, a favorite of mine: Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic (part1). Not the MMO; the single player RP game.
Like DA:O, this game lives by its very lively and often funny characters, it has a very good story that will keep you interested much longer than the stupid powercreep. And it has an amazing plot twist, I admit I did not see it coming and it made me sh*t bricks.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Ok, so I tried Kingdoms of Amalur, pretty and interesting piece of game. Didn't have the time to try Warframe yet, but it looks interesting too.

While playing Amalur though, I had a thought: is there similar games (I already have Mass Effect) but with a different background than medieval-fantasy? maybe more modern or even sci-fi, not that I hate it, but there's so many games with swords, bows and staves, could be nice to see something different.

Regarding KOTOR, I have the 2 and the whole Jedi Academy collection, but the graphic engines are really old and running them in 800x600 fullscreen on a 22" 16:10 panel is quite tedious. Is there a trick for that?

Don't forget Worms Armageddon. It's hard to make Worms World Party work on Windows Vista or later, but Armageddon works great. Addicted to this one again after about 10 years.

I'm loving the hell out of Shadowrun Returns.

Its a really good turn based cyberpunk RPG.

This.

It's from the days when Bioware was at its peak of storytelling. Sadly, those days are now long lost, like tears in the rain.
