Lots of them in tax havens or places without capital gains tax like Singapore. A "small" donation of between half a million and 5mil and heres your new passport sir, thank you very much sir.

I dont think self imposed exile would ever be something id consider.

maybe not just over finances, but the societal outlook on sex and this quote that haunts me: "In America sex is an obsession, in other parts of the world it is a fact." Marlene Dietrich German movie actress (1901 - 1992)

take any form of structured payment or pension, lower cost of living (or even equivalent is ok combined with the final aspect of expatriating:...) women with accents and some damn modesty

Well stay away from sweden, things aren't better here. I recommend somewhere south, better climate and not so cold in the winter..

Interesting. I've done many green card (U.S. permanent resident) applications for European millionaires. They liked their countries fine, but wanted to immigrate to the U.S. to avoid high Euro taxes. Now it's going the opposite way.

I know there are a lot of wealthy Chinese millionaires that want to get into the USA for the protection of their assets not afforded in mainland China.

Not sure if the USA allows the buying of citizenship though like other nations.

Reagan sure did a great job of screwing up our country by getting rid of the high taxes on the super rich individuals and corporations, thus entities like Apple and others contribute not a dollar to the betterment of America.

Our bridges are collapsing folks.

ed: I guess they are assuming children will go door-to-door asking for donations to rebuild our infrastructure or something. Reagan said, "the people will take up the slack" and better the country themselves.

Post 2008 Economic Collapse -- yeah, right. Let me get my wallet.

If things continue as they are the USA will not survive the century. The people in charge seem to be doing everything they can to destroy themselves.

Oh yes, that's the current big thing in U.S. immigration. Municipalities set up investment projects. Millionaires (currently mostly Chinese) invest US $1mil and get permanent resident status. Over five years, they get their million bucks back, plus 1% or so interest. By that time, they've been a permanent resident for five years and are eligible for citizenship. This is huge business for U.S. cities, not to mention U.S. immigration lawyers. The competition between municipal projects is intense. Chinese millionaires come on guided tours of various ones, evaluate various perks offered, and take their pick.

(BTW, working with these millionaire types is a real pain. Gawd, how incredibly cheap they are, no matter what nationality. They want the benefit, but getting them to actually part with the $1mil for low interest almost kills them. Meanwhile, you have to advise them on whether they can get student financial aid for their college student kids, whether buying a personal residence would quality as the required investment, etc. Very demanding, cheap as dirt people-- 100% of them I've encountered, so far).

Oh hell yes.

And i deal with them on a daily basis.

But they can be insanely generous too.

I am one of those people the article is talking about, here's my own perspective on the issue.

My mother is a USian, but she left the country when she was 19. Even though I wasn't born in the US, I've had dual citizenship since I was born. Me, my mother and my siblings already declare and pay our taxes where we work and reside, which is not the USA.

But recently the US government has said that even though we don't work or live there, and pretty much have nothing to do with that country in all practical matters, we now have to declare and pay taxes to the US, regardless that we are already doing this in the country where we do reside. The USA is the only country in the world that requires its citizens to do this.

And not just that, the US government is trying to enforce this by requiring international banks to monitor and inform it of any US citizens that may have accounts with them.

So we've been consulting with lawyers to relinquish our US nationalities and passports. This is utterly ridiculous: if we lived in the US, we would be willing declare and pay our taxes over there, but that's certainly not the case, and we derive no benefit whatsoever from being USian (aside from not having to apply for VISAs if we want to visit). It's just a liability now, and I couldn't care less about silly "patriotic" feelings, I see myself as a citizen of the world.

So screw it, bye bye US citizenship.

Is now a good time to mention that I occupy a certain position in a certain nations military; and I occupy this position primarily in anticipation of said country collapsing into civil war? I'm a history major, I see the writing on the wall, oh and if those of you in Western Europe and the northerly neighbor of said country think you can avoid being sucked into said conflict; you are in for a rude awakening.

But I look at this as a positive, I do not have to continue to live in the shadow of a century worth of rot. I will not be obliged to support a decrepit, weak, stupid system which has created a class of entitled, greedy little cretins.

The foundation is decayed and the wood is rotten folks. We are going to rip this construction of corruption and incompetence apart.

Excelling in all things terrible.

....and most of those will be happy in the end when we are finally a 100% Baptist Theocracy. Scary how many have this as a dream that I unfortunately knew living mostly in the South.

This sort of article shows up on Yahoo every 4-6 months. While it makes great headline, the reality is that we are talking about a few hundred to a couple of thousand US citizens that are leaving. Considering how many tens of thousands come to US legally and illegally, it is really just a great headline, with very little if any substance behind it.

Typical journalistic hyperbole. You could say the precise same thing about any other country on the planet - some folks will always be dissatisfied, and will move on looking for greener pastures.

They arent leaving.....they are ex-pats who have, by definition, already left, but have kept their nationality for various reasons, but, due to not being happy for whatever reason with the new tax thingie, and now changing nationality. The article also talks about the problems they have banking in their new country.

You would, of course, know that it is not about emigration, but about ex-pats, because, you have, of course, read the article in full.

I wasn't going to address that bit, because frankly, it makes the hyperbole even more silly. But since you went there... Yes, I read the article. My contempt for it has already been noted.

Maybe you can suggest that the USA should build a wall around the country to keep the people and the money on the inside.
