Carreer question from a newb... about ship progression, anti-piracy, standing, etc.

Hi everyone :)

I've been playing EVE just for about 3 weeks now and find it very fun. Now I have around 1 million SP, spreading all over from combat skills to research and mining ones, I came to realize this might be a good time to focus so I want to ask for opinions from vets.

Now, for the questions...

  1. When should I move on to a bigger ship?

  2. I've been flying a Thorax for lvl2 security missions for weeks, and as it feels too easy now, just moved on to the lvl3 with a Ferox (pls, no "get a Drake!" for now :)).

So far, I don't find lvl3 missions too challenging with the new ship but my skills are so lacking that I can't even fit a 250mm railgun II yet.

Should I aim for a BS/lvl4 missions right away, or should I wait till I can fit every T2 equipments to my current BC? Is there any rule of a thumb guideline to ship/level progression per SP?

  3. Should I worried about low faction standing?

  4. Even I've been running security missions for couple of weeks, my faction standing towards Caldari and Amarr already have been dropped to -2 range. Should I try to fix it or at least prevent it from falling even further?

I want high standing to the Gallente faction, because I want to have a POS for research soon. And I don't plan to switch over to Caldari or Amarr side even though I'm flying Caldari ship. But how much will it affect my playing once I get -5 for the both factions?

  5. Proper roles for Rokh/Naga?

  6. I have a fancy to fly a sniper style ship. So I thought I should cross train for Rokh, as I heard it to be arguably the king of sniper BS, and I can fit railguns.

But I also read that snipers in general doesn't play well for PvE. I find mission running rather repetitive already, so I want to move on to the PvP world some day.

Is there any recommendable role for a potential Rokh pilot in playing PvP aside from piracy? Maybe something like an anti-pirate corp would suit me well, but I'm wondering if there's such corp for a newb like me, and if there is one, is there a place for Rokh in these kind of operations?

Most importantly, how and when should I turn for a PvP carreer?

Sorry for asking too many questions at once. But I find there's so many things to know in this game so I can't help:)

Thanks in advance!

Seeing as you want to to turn to PVP, I would focus for some time on frigates, and join a PVP or FW corp, or simply move down to lowsec by yourself. You will lose many ships, and need to learn and you are not going to find constantly losing cruisers/battlecruisers fun (don't even worry about battleships, they need massive amounts of skills to make them decent, I've actually never flown one, no need).

I disagree

When doing L3s you really should be able to fit T2 modules. So yeah, slow down a bit. Especially if you want to PvP, core skills are very important.

Long range fits are preferred for PvE. The problem with Ferox and Rokh is that they have no damage bonus. In PvE avoiding/tanking damage is usually not a big deal, so extra damage is strongly preferred because it lets you finish missions faster. Once you get T2 railguns you will be able to use Javelin ammo which trades range for damage.

1. You don't need all T2 equipment for level 4s. Not even T2 guns, for that matter. Usually if you can T2 your low and mid slots, that's good enough. I started doing level 4 missions in an all-T1 raven... that was a mistake. But it doesn't take a full T2 fit.

2. If you get -5 you'll be restricted to only using half of highsec (gallente and minmatar). You *can* get high enough standings to get a POS without dropping to -5 with the opposing faction. Training diplomacy to V will help significantly. Once it goes significantly below -2 it'll be much harder to repair.

3. I've PVE'd and PVP'd all my EVE life. Unless you're in a big corporation, PVP probably won't be super profitable. I've been in rokh fleets in nullsec, but they aren't something your average lowsec pirate/anti-pirate fleet will fly. So really, you can PVE and PVP at any time.

The rokh, hyperion, and megathron are all feasible hybrid boats for level 4s. The naga and Talos are almost strictly PVP on the other hand. It's definitely feasible to mission with rails, but blasters are generally faster if you are capable of getting into range. Since they use the same skills you may as well tailor them to the situation. Some people switch between long/short range depending on the spawn range of rats in the mission.

Quick Answers:
1. A Thorax (Gallente Cruiser) to a Ferox (Caldari Battlecruiser)? Maybe you mean a Brutix?
2. Nah, Social skills (specifically Diplomacy) can help you there.
3. SKINE is right on the money with "use a small ship"...

Longer Answers:
1. IN very general/broad terms, your ship progression should progress with your support skills. I.E. Frig = L1 ... Dessie = L1/2 ... Cruiser = L2/3 ... BC = L3/4 .. BS = L4/5. So if you've only got L1 in your core skills -- Electronics, Engineering, Energy Systems -- and gunnery + missiles/drones [race dependent -- Gallente are more guns+drones, for example]; you should probably stick to a frigate. If you've got a mix of L1/2, then a Dessie is OK. If you're mostly L3, then a cruiser or maybe a BC (depending on situation). you really shouldn't be in a BS til you have L4 skills.

Obviously, this is a conservative plan, and there's nothing stopping you from hopping in a BS as fast as possible ... just be prepared to lose it very, very quickly.

Also, if you really are swapping between Caldari and Gallente ships right now, stop that for like 4-6 weeks and flesh out one or the other's tanking skills to L4, just so that you're not gimped to much when you're flying the ship(s), since caldari generally rely on shield tanks and Gallente generally favor armor.

2. If you do find your standings with Caldari too low, then just train up the Diplo skill to like 3 or 4. It'll take you from like -5 to -2.

3. This really depends on who you're flying with. If it's a coordinated corp/alliance with sanctioned fits, well then you'll probably be flying those. If you're in a smallish corp that doesn't really have a fleet doctrine (and they appreciate any help they can get when needed), then I don't see anything wrong with either the Naga or Rokh -- other than that if you're alone (e.g. everyone else has blasters/autocannons/pulse lasers fit)

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

It's a Ferox, because I decided to cross train for a Rokh (and also because I think a Ferox is just a tad bit less ugly than a Brutix. It reminds me too much of a certain funny looking fishCool) As you said, I guess flying a Caldari ship benefits shield tanking so I thought I should switch early to train relevant skills fast.

And for everyone who left a reply, I'm reading carefully each of the post and it's already helping me much.

Thanks much! Please keep them coming Big smile

Aim to get every T2 apart from the guns then once getting the battleship leveled to 3-4 get T2 Large Guns. Tbh the Hyperion and Megathron are much better ships for running Level4s than a Rokh.

If you work for The Sisters of Eve you use something called Derived Standings as SoE are a faction themselves and are friendly towards Gallente and Minmatar (to a lesser extent). What this means is by doing storylines for SoE your Gallente faction standing will go up faster than if you were to do storylines for Gallente.

    WRT to bad standings:
    > just don't do anti-faction missions
    > if you do, avoid shooting towers if possible as you lose more faction standing than shooting ships
    > some anti-faction missions don't require shooting, you can do those
    > SoE don't give many anti-faction missions anyway (but it varies from agent to agent) so less to decline
    > Look up the Faction Standing Repair Plan on the Evelopedia, it's not just for fixing bad standings you can also use the same principles to boost good standings as well

    1) For PVE (missions I assume) move up to a battleship only after you have the ability to field T2 scout drones, T2 tanking mods, and have your capacitor skills to at least IV.

The drones to take care of frigates/cruisers that get close. Seriously, good luck hitting them with large guns Ugh
The tanking mods so you can tank the incoming DPS. At first, it's important that you have some survivability so you have a decent chance to survive the occasional screwup.
Capacitor skills for the same reason - capping out sucks.

At first, you'll have to spend a lot of fitting slots on your tank, but the important thing is that you don't lose your ship. As you get better at running lvl IV missions, you'll undoubtedly be tweaking your fit for more damage.

PROTIP : while pricey, meta 4 guns have the same damage modifier/rate of fire as the T2 variants. The only downside is that they can't fit T2 ammo.

    2) Unless you are OK with being essentially locked out of 1/2 of highsec, you should be slightly concerned with faction standings. At -5, faction navies start attacking you once you enter their space. While they aren't particularly dangerous, they are a pretty big inconvenience. I don't think they scram you, but they will chase you around, so you won't be able to do much more than travel through at a fairly brisk pace.

I know you are shooting for a highsec POS, but you should consider that every moon is already taken by others who had the same idea. So first you'll have to clear a moon (severe pain). Then you'll have to defend it when someone decides they want your moon.

    3) IMHO, the Rokh has been mostly replaced by the Naga. It's way cheaper, and fills the same role, albeit without nearly as much survivability.

Snipers don't work well in EVE? Since when?

I decided to join a FW, and will get a T1 frig again and try to hone up my skills first before moving up to bigger ships. I'll keep my Ferox in my hangar as well, as I'll still do occasional PvE missions for standing and ISK.

Thanks a lot for all who have posted a reply! I found them very helpful and even found one member volunteered to help me starting out my PvP career.

It was my first post in the forum, and I was amazed at seeing how helpful the community is.

P.S. @Veritaal What I wrote was for 'PvE' not for 'EVE' Blink Even though I haven't yet tried to fly a Naga for PvE, I can guess such situations like jumping out of an accel gate right into the middle of a frigates swarm, etc.

When can you jump in a bigger ship ?
When you have enough income to lose it regulary.
