Thanks - Yes I APed. That was it.

Just to reiterate. NEVER autopilot. ESPECIALLY in low sec. ESPECIALLY in an industrial. When you autopilot your ship will slow to normal sub-warp speeds some kilometers off gates and stations, leaving you very vulnerable. In a badger, the amount of time it takes to reach the gate is long enough for several elephants to give birth and grow old.

According to the tutorials you get around by Set Destination in the People and Places followed by autopilot.. I'm getting really bored with that routine anyway, what should I be doing?

doing it manually, with whichever method you prefer, hotkey, overview, radial menu, rightclick, etc

Give the command to warp/jump yourself.

Setting destination to let the game find a path for you is fine tho, we all do it...

Set destination (from People and Places, from Assets, from map, or from anywhere else that you can get a system/station name where you're going to). Select first gate from overview, click jump (shortcut key - D). Once you've jumped, click next gate in overview, click jump. Repeat until at destination.

Reserve autopilot for quieter areas of highsec only (not the trade hubs) when you have nothing of value in your cargohold, when you're not in any hurry and when you're watching anyway for any shenanigans that may take place.

What the people above me said: warp yourself to the gate directly at zero. Jump. Warp yourself to the next gate (highlighted in yellow if you set a destination) once you've loaded the new grid.

Do not use autopilot anymore, even in highsec, except in very specific situations where gank and loss risks are mitigated.

Know and remember that flying T1 industrials through lowsec without a scout is very hazardous. Those are big, slow, paper-thin ships that will be destroyed by any combat ship that can survive the sentry fire for a few seconds. If you still want or need to take the risk, fit your industrial for agility first (nanofibers are your friends) and don't haul really expensive stuff in it.

Regarding your current loss I strongly doubt any amount of additional tank would have saved your ship, the alpha damage from a Tornado is just too high and the potential EHP you can pump out from a badger is just too low. The only course of action in that case would have been to not break your invulnerability status, identify the threats in your overview and dock again as soon as the session timer (something like 5 seconds nowadays) expired.

Actually, I've found you only need to select the first gate. Once you've jumped through it autoselects the next gate or station, meaning you can just keep your mouse over that button in the selected item window and just click it after each jump. I think that feature showed up with Odyssey.

I just use the jump button. One less click and the results are the same.

Interesting. Hadn't noticed that before.

Not exactly, from my experience there's often a slight delay before jump that might cost you a pod/lightly tanked ship if there are fast-locking hostiles on gate.

Also you will have to lose this habit when you get into large fleets or your FC and fleetmates will hate you soon enough.. Blink

If you take all the precautions listed by the others you can still get popped. I've been moving a lot of cargo around low sec for a few months now and have observed how gankers operate. One tactic I see a lot at least half the time is where one or more ships hug the exit port of a station. I almost got burned by this a couple of times and by the sounds of it OP got did.

The problem is you can't see what's waiting at the exit of a station when you hit that undock button. The best way to avoid this is to have a second set of eyes watching outside the station. If the gankers are hugging the exit don't leave the station.

For low sec travel always follow these rules;

1) Don't autopilot as people all ready said, but worth repeating even if your sick of hearing it.

2) Don't fly from gate to gate. Gate campers know the trajectory and know exactly where to position there ships to the centimeter for an instant kill.

3) Don't exit a station unless you have eyes looking at it from a safe distance.

4) Fly a scout to know what dangers lie ahead.

5) Fly cloaked. This is tough if your not flying a blockade runner or covert ops, but it will save a lot of headaches.

Every time I have been popped it's because I got lazy and didn't follow the above rules.

Also look into the MWD/Cloak trick, I am not good at explaining it so I won't bother. But in short it will help you get into warp while at gates without the use of a blocade runner or covert ops.
