How was eve at the begining?

I remember nullsec inhabitants would shoot down stargates after the downtime, so that nobody could come to them until the next downtime.

- Everybody would just run if they could when they saw a Raven on grid

- Ravens could throw torpedos out to 90+ km

- 100 million isk was a very big deal back then.

- When HACs came they could sink a BS in like 10 seconds

- Matar used to be "whinematar" (look it up in the old forums before they got overbuffed in 2009)

- If you were in lowsec and saw a Gallente boat, well that was the last thing you saw in your boat

- Sniper BS fighting each other from insane ranges were a thing

- The Scorpion used to be a turret boat

- The was a time when level 4 missions were very hard (I'm still mad they made them very easy for the stupid folks)

- There was no way to print billions of isk in your wallet in a few hours

- Harvester mining drones

- Multiple mwds on any ship with enough midslots

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

Mmm and being totally pedantic about it, missions didn't exist at the start. Was 6-12 months in when (L1/L2) missions turned up P

I admit both 2003 and me doing missions was a while ago Smile

It does tend to blur together - I can remember 2003/2004 eve stuff chronologically OK but after that I don't remember anything date-specific other than the total unmitigated disaster patches, and there were a few of those Lol Oh and I remember some fights which stand out.

I do however remember what I think is the only rollback in Eve's history. Insurance got introduced in a Friday patch, abused over the weekend and by Monday (may even have been Sunday) the playerbase was significantly richer. So much richer in fact that CCP decided there was no option other than to rollback to Friday pre-DT. That was the first week I played, second week the server had been live maybe.

You could have a roam using 5 BS and feel king of the hill....i mean, guys, we have 5 BS, check my power projection.

Warp 15 km to gate, (no warp to 0 option, only bookmarks) get popped by sniper.

Harvester Minimg Drones. Those were the days.

While we're at it, I've been meaning to ask: will the Blood Drop or Complex Fullerine Shard ever be useful for anything?

I've remembered another thing. There were loads and loads and loads of cans littering space everywhere, permanently. Recruitment adverts comprising hundreds of painstakingly jettisoned cans in the shape of letters. And, inevitably, colossal penis drawings, made out of cans. I kind of miss all that.

I started playing mid '06 just before the Revelations patch arrived. Contracts, Rigs and Invention.. and exploration scanning.

Scanning was the most ridiculously complex, time-burning concept.

Comb, Sift, Quest and Pursuit probes (all different AU sizes, you couldn't resize probes) for 4 different complex types
Snoop, Spook, Fathom & Ferret for combat probing - oo and Observator probe (dumped in Revelations I think)

You had to cart them all around as an explorer/combat prober.

I think there were 25 different probe types altogether.

The multispectral probe took 10 minutes to scan.

It was all beard stroking and smoke & mirrors, and the guys who really had it nailed were treated with a certain amount of awe..

I wish it had never been changed :s

You're making all that up. Really?

I heard back in the day you used to have to fly (well, click) uphill both ways through a gravitational gradient going and coming to Jita.

Bring your possibles.

You had to manually position them too by flying to the location and dropping the probe. Then you'd scan, get a partial hit, make some mid-warp bookmarks and re-deploy your probes. Plus they only scanned about 1AU up and down regardless of the size so safespots too far off the vertical plane of a system were basically unscannable.

Not only that, it was somewhat luck based if you even got a hit after finding something via a multispectral.

I dumped a quest probe of the type of thing I'm trying to find at every close group of planets and just mashed scan over and over until something came up and went from there. (I think you could warp to partial signatures and dump closer range probes then)

What we have now is light years ahead of the initial scanning system.

Want to make your eyes bleed?

Read the description of the "new" scanning system:

http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=431586&page=1#8

Here are some of the gems waiting for you in that post, all dealing with combat/ship scanning:

-"When the timer reaches 0 you will get a list with results. If your target is not in this list don’t fret it. The probing system is now chance based and you might need to scan several times (20+ if you are looking for a very small ship with an observator probe)"

-"Flight Time – The amount of time the probe stays in space. You need to finish any scan before the flight time runs out or it will fail." Some probes only lasted five minutes, and it was possible that a low skilled pilot could not complete a scan before his probe timed out)

-"you can not launch a probe within the scan radius of another probe." Yup, you had to destroy your old probe to launch a new one . . . .leading to this bit of advice: "You should destroy your probes as soon as you got the results you want from them, especially short range probes. Done right it should only show up on the d-scanner of the target for around 30-40 sec, short enough time for him to miss it"

No plex to pay for your account. I had to obtain a creditcard to pay for the game when I started in 2004.

Your skills kept on training, even when your account was expired. (Well , until the selected skill level was trained.)

When we went in with a 12 man BS/cruiser corpfleet, for the first lvl4 mission after the launch..... only 1 ship got out the first room Roll

And a lot of other things....That were good times

Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honour matters. Their silence is your answer.
