I don't believe EVE can take ideas from a cloned version of itself. However, I can see them using the small things it does different to perhaps better itself.

I don't think we are ever going to see atmospheric flight in Eve Online despite the fan fest video from years ago. As a fan I gave up on that a while ago. From a technology perspective I think they could pull it off with how warp tunnels are now scripted. Pretty cool possibilities that will never ever make it in game. Which leaves room for me to figure it out in UDK/.

As a matter of fact, the first game in the X franchise was released in 1999, 4 years before EVE Online. Roll

We can but dream for a Freelancer 2.

Without operations like mine it would be impossible for certain Alliances to conduct a respectable war. There are three basic types of arms deal: white, being legal, black, being illegal, and my personal favorite, gray.

I love it

CCP releases avatar technology . Small group of players howl "EVE is doomed"

Games like Star Citizen and the new x game arrive which include it from the beginning. Players hand over millions of dollars in cash.

I wonder where they possibly got that idea from...

And just think of this... neither Star Citizen nor X-Rebirth offer anything resembling the kind of avatar gameplay that CCP intended pre-Incarna.

I mean: SC avatar technology will be used to interact to NPC and FPS gameplay during ship boarding. X-Rebirth avatar technology is only implemented to interact to NPCs.

They don't have "meaningful gameplay" attached to avatars, not even in the respective game's definition of "meaningful gameplay". Avatars are in the mix for the sake of immersion alone.

But oh, guess EVE can do well without avatars. It does well without being fun, without being casual friendly, without being soloable and without being innovative. If you've done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?

Funny, the X series is what got me into EvE in the first place. I said to myself, "Self, this is just X-Reunion with multiplayer!"

Yay, exactly the same I thought.... it turned to be quite different, though. I wonder how many people actually signed in to EVE while being 100% aware of what and where were they signing into...

I recall the infortunate experiences of my first char (sadly biomassed since, *sigh*) and my attempts to shoehorn EVE into the "best ship = best game" cathegory. Losing a painstakingly bought Megathron in its maid mission was not fun at all, and of course the fit was bad in the "make baby Jesus cry" sense of a bad fit. I think it even had some empty slots, but can't check for sure... Lol

Honestly, i don't think any game can be so deep as EVE, think about the wormholes, the null mechanics, the modules, the whole market, the mmo factor, human factor, you can't find it in any game .Yeah eve is 10 years old, but look what it became from the start, it's so awesome game, but if they could get the avatar expansion in it, it could become a GOD of space games. How do you wear three pairs of Jesus?!??

Immigrant workers are cheap. You could hire six Jesuses to do just about anything (including being worn, whatever that entails) for around 12 bucks an hour.

It isn't the graphics, it is the promis they are making. And if they can maintain those promises with the same level as the hype is, then it will make Eve, old.
Every single game in development, will make every single current game, old... if you believe the hype.

Doesn't even have to be hype. It's human nature to read our own wishes into promises.

That said, there's competition on the horizon for EVE, finally, and that's a good thing Smile

the X-series is one of the best 4x Single Player games out there
it's moding community is pretty damn amazing too

so as a SP game, it's not really competition for eve

Seagull gave us the 5 year plan info at fanfest
right now it's a little too early in that cycle to see how well that is going
next year might be a bit pre-emptive too
but by mid 2015 ... we should definitely start seeing something concrete from it
and if we aren't then that's the time to start re-examining how long your prepared to wait

As I stated elsewhere, EVE and the X series compete for player time, and X has got the advantage of being casual-friendly. It is easier and more rewarding to invest 200 or 300 hours in a game of X games than in EVE -and also is cheaper.

Also, as much as EVE has got the "human factor" of an MMO, we shall remember that X games have got a terrific modding community. FAI, X3: Terran Conflict was litherally a mod developed into a commercial launch.

In the long run, EVE has got more lasting power because of its MMO nature, but the time it takes to burn out some 1,000 hours in a series of games in a X game means months without playing EVE.

I can see the irony in this, and I'm one of what I'm learning is MANY more that are disappointed in CCP for throwing their hands up and giving up on Incarna. From what I can tell, the one thing that blew up in their faces and set that whole mess off was that CCP was using it as a means of introducing micro-transactions. At the time, I could really understand why people would feel this way. But then I went onto things like Guild Wars 2 and Planetside 2, liked em enough to throw money into some cosmetic stuff and then realized "Wow, this is really no different!" and then all of the sudden, Incarna wasn't so bad.

I personally LOVED the release of Incarna (but not the introduction of AUR). A chance to immerse myself in a new way in the EVE universe. I face-palmed myself realizing that due to the capsuleer concept, we'd never be able to walk around in our ships though (sort of like SWG: JTL did with large ships). Anyways, I've always wanted a space game I could immerse myself in, and be a part of that world. A second life. EVE Online was my ticket, my hopes for that future, and Incarna was a nod in the direction of my dream. But it seems CCP has thrown in the towel and given up on it, and as I have seen the reaction from so many people after it's release, I can't blame CCP for being afraid to tread on that ground again. But I will blame them for giving up on it as they have ever since release.

X Rebirth looks promising, and having played past X games, I also know that EGOSoft can deliver a solid time-sink experience in a sandbox. Rebirth looks to further immersion, and this is where I'm sold. I've been playing EVE Online since 2006, and I've held my breath for so very long that it would truly evolve. But long story short, it just has not evolved enough within the span of time I've played. A little patch here, a little patch there. Do a little more work than usual and we'll call it an expansion! But nothing has ever truly revolutionized EVE Online, and sadly for my part, it's failed my hopes and dreams. Not that steps haven't been taken in that direction, but I look over the years at what has come, and look at the years to come and it just doesn't seem like it will ever feasibly happen, not without CCP taking serious risks.

So I've been talking to my wife about this over the last year (has played herself, but gave up long ago for similar reasons), and she knows how much this game has meant to me with all the time I've put into it and the hopes I've had for the future. But her and I both agree that if X: Rebirth delivers, we'll be leaving EVE Online behind (with feeling akin to a break up most likely :P, but knowing it was for the better). The shift from multiplayer to singleplayer doesn't bother me much, as I've spent the last one and a half years soloing EVE Online anyhow. So all in all, this is most likely my good-bye to you CCP. We will see soon.

So, who ended up buying it?

Did they keep their promises?
