Actually, I prefer pirate tears, carebear tears are too easy to harvest.

Every day in every way I improve my skills and get better.

You're a better man than I, for varying definitions of man.

Start with the Career Agents then move towards finding a player corporation.

The Career Missions will give you a look at many of the types of activities that Eve has to offer...
The your corpmates can guide you from there.
Ultimately, you will find there are many, many things you can do in Eve. You will find that your preferences can and will change over time... that't the neat thing about this game, we can can change direction any time we wish.

I mine, but what do I do then with the income that I will get? Do I use the ISK to go and get a frigate? Then what?
I'm sort of stumped by the steep learning curve. I know all the basics, I just don't know what to do with them.

What are the main activities in this game?

To sum it up, I just don't know what to aim for!
Hopefully I put this thread in the right place.

I would go to the recruitment forum and read there for a week or two. Maybe visit the chata channels of good prospects.. or go the next step and have a teamspeak discussion if it feels right.

I'm sure you'll like to do solo things too, I certainly spent well over 1/2.. maybe 80% of my logged in time doing things separately from copr mates... but the time I do spend with them and the things I got exposed to were some of the best times. Even if you only occasionally mine together, (or fight, as I have focussed my corp play on.. my industry and trading is solo) there is a pleasure of being able to say "finally got exumers" and having someone who knew you were waiting for that give you a "grats'' .

Running incursions, or living in a worm hole are more involved group activities.. and might be fun for you.

The key is, finding the right guyss/girls (yes, some women play the game... low numbers though.

If you like adults.. great game for you.. all sorts of adults. You can find a corp dominated by people in their young twenty's, people in their early 30s with young children.. or a mix

You can join a corp that likes the hijinx of sharing nakid pictures in chat.. those that go further.. those that won't tolerate any of that. You can find corps where they let people talk poitics and you have a lot of grumps complaining about the state of the world and how no one takes responsiblity for the actions anymore etc.

You can find a corp with lots of stoners (usually you'llf find a few in any diverse pvp corp.. no matter what the jpg rules are)...

Of course.. the obvious divides are by what the activities are... as your question was mostly about.

But,, I'd say that you might find you enjoy activities you never thought you would... if you have people you enjoy interacting with at least for a few hours of the week.. The game comes alive that way.. and all the tedious activities start having more purpose.. because of the true Koolaid of social interaction in the evenings.
Of course, the obvious devides

Really this a question only you can answer. You need to ask yourself what sort of thing you enjoy most in EvE. Some just like making isk. This can be done in highsec with missions, manufacturing, trading, incursions or faction warefare. Perhaps PvP is your thing? As already mentioned, Red vs Blue is a great place to get experience in this field, though there are plenty of PvP corps out there as well. Both nullsec and wormhole space can provide access to some interesting areas of EvE, allowing you to get a taste of just about everything you fancy, all you'd need to do is find a corp to let you in. Or perhaps you'd like to try the darkside of EvE? Those that get enjoyment from the tears of their victims, as you explode, cheat, lie and scam your way to victory. Some get enjoyment out of leading, forming a successful corporation and working on its growth and the enjoyment of its members.

You could even set yourself a extremely difficult, long-term goal, such as owning sov over a system. Cool

Ultimately though, i'd say that the most important thing is to find a group of people that share whatever interests you. That way, you can get to know everything about it and share in the accomplishments, and make some friends along the way. Because solo play in EvE can only be fun for so long, before bordom sets in.

Post with your main, like a BOSS!

And no, i don't live in highsec.  As if that would make your opinion any less wrong.

It's a sandbox, so no one can really give you a direction, you really have find one yourself. While I can't tell you what to aim for, I can tell you what I did. Try a bit of everything, and find something you enjoy.

It is a game where you choose your own playstyle, your own goals and your own story.
Or you can join someone elses story and be part of that.
CCP didn't make a path or a story for you as that isn't the point of eve.

Some people mine all day and who knows what they do with their isk or why they do it. These people are regarded as the lowest of the low in eve and http://www.minerbumping.com/p/the-code.html these kind people are trying to help them be better players and better people. Read that blog a bit to see the sort of story one person can start.
Some people mission /explore run incursions in high sec and save up for hugely expensive ships. They often never leave high sec and eventually someone kills thier expensive ship in the hope that the modules drop.
Some people become suicide gankers.
Some people fight in faction warfare.
Some people become pirates.
Still other mercenaries in high , low or null sec.
Some aim to become PVP elite and wipe out large fleets with much smaller fleets.
Still others are solo hunters picking of prey before retreating into the shadows again.
Some join a small sov holding group and try and defend what they have against the big boys.
Some form vast alliances and hold sway over huge regions of null sec space.
Some people become traders and manipulate the market for personal gain and to ruin their rivals.
Others become manufacturers producing ships and modules in vast quantities.
Others live in wormholes and farm sleepers/ manufacture/ mine /make drugs etc.
Most people do several things from this list.

For me it doesn't really matter what you pick as what makes the game great is the community you join and the fun you have together trying to achieve your goals. Picking a path that doesn't include any PVP is imo the biggest mistake someone new to the game could make. But to each their own.

be very very careful doing this. Most corps in eve and utterly fail /useless and you will ruin your game joining them. This one step is the most important choice you will make in eve.

First do mission grinding in High sec...get bored eventually,
Join a null sec corp and move incredible amounts of useless stuff to some god-forsaken ratting system.
Get camped there by afk cloakers.
make some isk...get bored with home defense and stupid F1 fleet fights.
Get kicked out by some bigger fish.
retreat to high sec...be bored immediatly.
end up shooting as many people as possible in low sec - harvest tears - be satisfied.

What do you want to do?

That's the point of EvE, craft your own content.

You want to go visit every solar system, take a screenshot of it's star and then make one of those pictures made up of other pictures? go for it

You want to mine all the minerals? go for it

You want to take over a 0.0 system and make it open to all and organise thunderdome style fights that people bet isk on? go for it

You want to scam people of all their monies? go for it

failing that, make isk, go blow stuff up :)

Making others cry is fun

edit;
I should probably add that others will try to stop you doing these things, because it's a sandbox so you have to put in the effort to accomplish the awesome things :)
