Incorrect. Players refer to it interchangeably as 'shield' and 'shields'.

As for the in-game content, this is not at all the first time it's been pluralized. See, for example:

That's true for the exemples, but I won't list the whole rest of links that refer to shield in singular cuz it's simply every other single skill and module that refers to :/

...except for pretty much all the shield and ewar rigs, the shield certificates, ~~all~~ some of the Kaalakiota- and Viziam-designed T2 ships, a substantial portion of the projectile ammo, a Tengu subsystem...

Seriously, it's out there a lot more than you seem to realize. I'm not saying that 'shield' is incorrect, I'm just pointing out that 'shields' is also correct and widely used. So unless you can convince me that someone wouldn't look for shield skills in the "Shields" category because he only has one shield, then I don't think this needs to be "fixed".

The question is not if people understand or not, obvisouly they do, even if you would say "The thing that protects your ship upon your armor", the fact is that many people don't understand that change since it's commonly said Shield, in everything, in shield fleets and so on.
The question you have to ask is, if it's Shield like it has been used to, then you won't understand what it is ?
If you don't care about it, it will simply make no difference for you, so you don't care about the "fix" too ..

It took very little effort to find a lot of examples of the use of 'shields', so I'm not convinced that's true.

You're right, I don't care one way or the other, which is why I favor the default of CCP not wasting even a minute more of time on this.
