How do people manage to camp gates in low sec? Don't they draw aggro from the gate guns when the fire on somebody?

Logi and/or a good enough tank to tank the guns (usually cruiser sized or bigger).

Gate guns do not instantly murder anything like CONCORD. They stop shooting if you warp away (even if you come back and shoot the same target) and deal high, yet tankable DPS, split between all members of the camp.

When I camp I make use of a bookmark just off-grid with the gate, allowing me to quickly shed sentry aggro. Gate guns cycle through all elegable targets. So if 10 people go suspect on a gate, one only recieves 1/10 damage of total sentry DPS. In fact, you might have very well destroyed your target before it's even "your turn" to get hit. Also, fitting a fat, resistant passive tank works like a charm, especially if you have some logi helping out.

Most assault frigs can tank gate/station guns for quite some time

Assuming we're talking about a single AF...

Your definition of "quite some time" may differ slightly from mine.

I have tanked gate guns for a few mins in a Jag (like 2-3min). A fleet of frigates or assault frigs typically won't engage at a gate. But if you have a few cruisers to hold the tackle you can still get nice kills.

Something like a drake could tank the guns for quite a while. With Battle cruisers or above you should assume its like null-sec without bubbles.

On a gatecamp ships that can't actually tank well, can stil help out in very meaningfull ways. You can for example, sensor-boost your buddies, and as soon as enough people tank sentries output some DPS or disrupt the targets tracking, target-paint it, web it... as long as you are not the initial agressor, many frigates can take 1 sentry hit. Just warp off as soon as that hit lands. Once aggro is shed, you can quickly warp back for more carnage. This change to sentry gun mechanics came in Retribution and allows solo pirates to engage a target and loot it without having to tank sentries.

Does any one know if this is also true in hi-sec?

It hardly matters. By the time you warp out and back CONCORD will arrive and kill you.

It is irrelevant in hisec as any action that would warrant sentry aggro would also warrant a CONCORD response.

I was once outclassed by a vengeance on a gate. I had a 1600mm plate on my vexor and had to disengage and warp out... true story.
I plugged amarr frig in that day.

I tried to gank an autopiloting industrial in a .5 with a catalyst and the gate guns got me before I got him, as I am only a week old, I know I need more DPS/support skills but I was thinking if I was aligned to a safe just off grid, engage, warp off, turn around and warp back I might still have sufficient time before Concord arrives to complete the gank assuming the gate guns stop firing. I guess I am wishfully thinking.

Thanks for your input, sorry for hijacking your thread OP.

Just an FYI... avoiding CONCORD's retribution is considered an exploit.

This doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't shoot people in high-sec. It just means that losing your ship as punishment is pretty much mandatory.

AFAIK you cannot even try to warp with a criminal flag in high-sec, therefore the question is irrelevant.

You can't warp in highsec once you have committed a crime. In very high security systems response time is under 10sec and you are insta capdrained and webbed/scramed. The DPS kills anything fast.

In high sec assume you get 1 shot of alpha mostly. Of course pro high sec gankers know where and how they can often get more shots off. But the ship is always dead.
