So while this report might be a little sensationalist, it is nonetheless food for thought as a 54% drop in revenue is huge for a game as big as World of Warcraft.

Just how long until we see something like this hit EVE?

Part of me hopes this is the bubble bursting on the MMO bubble.

I hope eve will not be affected that much. It isnt too big compared to that behemoth that in WoW.

Maybe its time for traditional sword and board mmos to be "daring" and not trot out the same old boring formula and clones.

Yes yes... i know, im a dreamer.

I hope it will weaken the WOW themepark meta that has dominated the MMO market for a while. Hopefully game devs will dare to make new stuff again.

I think Eve will remain largely unaffected simply because it's in such a world of it's own that the only thing that can truly damage it is itself...and maybe Star Citizen lol.

I think we are coming up on the end of the "traditional" MMO. Like FFXIV ARR is demonstrating, they can still be fun and people will still play them, but I think it's a clock ticking down. To be fair, taking huge risks in the MMO space is an incredibly huge gamble because of the resources involved so I can understand why companies have been hesitant for so long.

That said, someone eventually has to try and break the mold and lead the way for everyone else to follow. Thankfully, there's a lot of good stuff coming down the pipe like EQ Next and Black Desert (which I HIGHLY recommend you check out the trailer for) which will hopefully usher in a new era of MMOs. fingers crossed

Also, I really wish more people made more sci-fi MMOs.That'd be nice.

Aye more sci-fi would be nice.

Neocron was a fun game back in the day when it had people.

I have low hopes for Neocron 3.

But hey... least that game let you design your own apartment!

Total +1. I've never been a fan of high fantasy, to start with, nor of audiovisual SF franchises.

EVE really is in a different demographic. I'm not too worried that EVE is Dying(tm). Though maybe WoW is Dying(tm) instead... P

But you're not the only one...

The problem being, the people who green-light the development $$ are unlike to draw the same lessons from this as we are. In the US especially, but globally too, nothing succeeds like mimicry. Investors, and the people who must respond to investors, are not into risk-taking unless they've got a damn fine idea of the potential gain. So instead, everyone tends to Leeroy right down the already-paved-path. They claim that they're boldly forging ahead in new directions, but the only thing truly bold is their hyperbole.

I'm not super big on Fantasy, but a well-developed fantasy MMO with a true sandbox would be welcome to me. There are perhaps some niche sandbox fantasy MMOs, but I couldn't name you one of them.

One bet WoW / Blizzard has fatally missed is the opportunities for movie ties-in. A fantasy sandbox MMO would be a wonderful device for mining ideas for scripts and plots.

Those millions of subs are from Asia, Ace Uoweme said they didn't matter, so it obviously never happened. Twisted

I blame panda psychosis for the asia subs.

Asian culture is cool to us westerners. If you want to attract the chinese create renaissance europe.

Awfully late in the game. Should've happend five, six years ago. This late, they're maybe going to stem some of the slide in numbers, instead of capitalizing on existing momentum to drive peak accounts to even grander heights.
Better late than not at all, one supposes. *shrug*
