Computer issues

Hello there, I was hoping for some help.

Out of nowhere my computer shut down the other day, and when I try and restart it, my screen immidiately enters power saving mode, and after a while of running the computer restarts. The computer have never been physically mistreated and it's always had ample cooling (lots of fans and open chassi)

My graphics card is the radeon 3870x2. The computer is around two years old and this is the first time I've had issues with it.

re-seat your ram/graphics card and try again.

does the computer beep at all?

It beeps once when it starts. It always has, just before the fans start.
I've tried reseating both rams and graphics card, but to no effect. What could be wrong?

at a wild guess id say your graphics card is broken, as the single beep means its posting correctly - can you hear the hard drive spool up like its loading windows?

you should try throwing in an old/spare graphics card

All right, I'll try that when I get home in about an hour. How could my graphics card just break tho? It's only two years old as I mentioned in my op

Overheating, contacts wearing out, etc.

Sometimes reflowing your video card can help, but unless you are willing to replace it if things go wrong, don't do this:

Basically same thing, take the video card out and stick it in an oven.

A mate of mine's done this successfully like 4 times now Smile. He also fixed a hard drive by throwing it at a wall, apparently. However, I do not support his asshattish approach to fixing things. It also won't fix busted caps etc.

@OP: While you report having been nice to your PC's innards, these things do break given enough time, amount of time depending on component quality and often luck in terms of production quality. Even electronics are subject to wear I'm afraid...

Yeah this guy at work used to have to do that to his video card a lot, I personally would just go buy a new one lol

if it posts then it should have OK RAM. It would give a beep code if the ram was funky. I thing the graphics card needs to be worked on. If you have a friend, try throwing the card into his box and see if the screen comes up. Else, bake it in the oven or buy a new one.

I guess there's not really any downside to cooking the gfx then, I'll check that out tonight, it would be so funny if it actually worked. As it is just getting it checked out is half the price of just buying a new GFX.

I will post here after the experiment with the result :p

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated.

btw:

you can sometimes get broken harddrives back to work for some hours by putting them in the fridge ;)

not kidding !

Another question - I guess I need to remove fans/plastic parts from the gfx before I cook it?

I know exactly what's wrong as this happened to my 4870X2.

Put simply, your card has had its last days producing nice colourful pixels.

Ovens, frezzers? Hrm ... tin whisker treatments perhaps?

Just remember you will probably have to keep doing it and more frequently eventually.

Get a new card :P
