What are the pros and cons of Medium laser turrets vs heavy laser turrets? Are heavies not good against frigates? Is that basically it?

Heavies do more raw damage at higher range but don't track as well. Focused mediums are... just the opposite?

In general -- as with all lasers -- beams beat pulses until you get T2 and access to Scorch. Frankly medium beams are in awesome shape now period.

Don't you mean they're better if you're kiting? :p

Cause Beams tracks about 1/3 less than pulses.
You people and your potential damage. :P

Well if you're using beams you're usually capitalizing on the longer range of beams in which case tracking matters much less. Up close beams will lose to pulses everytime obviously.

If you intend to fly solo, pulses will be better cause you can actually apply damage to frigates, which means you can get away.

is it really just a trade off between damage and tracking / rate of fire? Will they both hit frigates? I know I read somewhere that a lot of bigger guns won't be able to hit small, fast frigs.

I am new to the game mind you, I am just trying to figure out if both of them will be effective against cruisers and below. I generally go with beams as opposed to pulse because at the moment I am just doing missions for ISK and I find that at least when fighting NPC's, beams seem to be best.

No, medium beams will not hit half-competent frigates within 15km. You can do things to mitigate their angular velocity, but it's safe to assume you will be missing with almost every shot.

oops. i should have specified. I meant PvE. but i am curious as to pvp as well. If medium beams cant hit pvp frig, then how can a cruiser defend itself?

However good frigate pilots with decent tanks (in PvP) are easily able to deal with a flight of unbonused light drones by getting in under your guns while tanking the drones, then killing the drones off, so you becoming a sitting duck. I

t starts becoming problematic for frigates when they have to burn a far distance to get to the enemy (thus being susceptible to blapping), the enemy has a medium/large neut, the enemy is a bonused drone ship, or even if the opponent is quite fast and can reduce transversal enough.

Are you talking about heavy and focused medium pulses?

Because the general rule is you fit the biggest guns you possibly can. People will say stuff like "tracking" but the dps/range advantage is far greater than any minor tracking difference.

This is true for every ship, of every weapon system, everywhere, always. If anyone tells you otherwise flex at them and call them a *****. Cram the biggest guns you can get on there. If one shoehorn doesnt work, use two, and some butter.

This is only a slight exaggeration. For PvE, it's more or less a truth.

I've had good luck so far with a beam Legion since 1.1 rolled out (although to be honest my play hours are really short right now). I suspect that if you know how to kite at all, you'll be much happier with beams for PvE in general at this point.
