Consider the current skillgroup names:
Armor
Shields

Why? Maybe this:
Armor
Shield
or
Armors
Shields

P.S. Possibly, my English is simply bad.

*shrug*

"Shield" is often pluralized in general use ("My shields are getting low!"), whereas "armor" never is. Could go either way, honestly.

Yes it should be Shield, but CCP have a history with their use of the English language. Big smile

More importantly, given the change to the Missile Launcher Operation group, why has gunnery not been renamed to 'Charges'?

Possibly because traditionally a shield usually protects from attacks from one direction at a time only. If there is protection from multiple angles, presumably multiple shields are involved thus plural.

Take that with a grain of salt though, I'm not a native English speaker.

Not a bad theory. I was thinking it's more directly an influence of some of the old SciFi (e.g. Star Trek). But maybe in turn that was their influence.

There is no plural form of the word armor. If you see "armors" it's just simply wrong.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

In the traditional sense, armor covered the body and a singular shield was held. In order to be completely shielded required multiple shields.

Sci-fi has also used "shield emitters" projecting multiple intersecting or overlapping force fields.

anyone noticed the cpu skills in engineering aswell? i would have thought skills which give bonuses to cpu would be in electronic systems, as they are part of the electronics, not engineering

Armor is an uncountable noun, and has no proper singular/plural distinction ('armors' is not a word, at least not in the plural noun context). You wouldn't say "How many armors is he wearing?", instead you would say "How much armor is he wearing?"

Shield however is a garden variety countable noun: therefore if you wish to refer to anything other than a single shield object, you would use 'Shields'.

Thus ends the obscure English lesson of the day.

The word "shields" was used in Star Trek. As a result, the plural form has become the standard within SF.

A quick check of some earlier scripts (such as Forbidden Planet and the 1953 version of War of the Worlds) show that the singular was used in American SF movies from the 1950s.

Both the singular and plural forms were used in Star Wars movies (for example, Han says both: "Angle the deflector shield
while I make the calculations for the jump to light speed" and "Angle the deflector shields while I charge up the main guns!").

The plural form was used in the 2005 remake of War of the Worlds.

That's because there isn't really a problem. Because 'shield' can be (and often is in common practice) pluralized but 'armor' can't, there's nothing actually incorrect about it, even though it may tweak your OCD.

The problem is that everywhere else inside the game, the word is spelled "Shield".
So the skillgroup should be Shield.

But people commonly refer to them as 'shields', so in this case CCP decided to call them 'shields'. Too hard to understand?

I don't know at what game you're playing but obviously it's not eve.
Players always refered to it as "shield", as well as the multiple ingame contents.

We're not playing star trek online.
