The spawned pre-set mission system is not appealing to many players
A more dynamic "living world" system would be suitable for the setting than the current "classical mmo" quests

A living world system revolves around interactions with (and between) entities and facilities
It also thrives on cause and effect, where actions have consequences on the system

There are three ways of encountering an interaction:
  • An agent may direct a player to a specific interaction
  • Entities/Facilities with an interaction in progress may broadcast for assistance
  • Players may locate interactions by themselves using sensor tools or simply being in the right place at the right time

Interactions could include attacking, defending, ransoming, escorting, etc
Bonuses could be granted for conditions such as an entity completing it's objective
Interactions in lo-sec may see agents and distress signals pitting players against each other

Prefixes may be applied to entities that are "up to something" such as a snooping reporter or infiltrating operative. A customs scanned transport could gain the "illegal" prefix. Prefixed entities can often have additional interactions

Many items obtained from interactions can be used by the player or handed in for LP. Contraband items, such as drugs or slaves, can be carried and handed-in if the player has a local customs license

New content ceases to become the writing of scripted missions that soon become repetitive. Instead it involves the addition of new elements and extensions to the systems mechanics, adding depth and real content across all of New Eden

Some basic example entities:

  • Reporter/Spy/Operative - Have objectives
  • Transport/Runner - Have a destination or route
  • Explorer/Researcher/Tour - Travels an area may visit or scan structures
  • Miner/Hauler - Gathers materials for their station or facility

  • Pirate - Seeks to ransom other entities
  • Raider - Seeks to destroy other entities
  • Abductor - Seeks to capture living cargo and crew from other entities

  • Escort - Escorts another entity or group of entities
  • Patrol - Roams a system or set of systems, responding to any friendlies in distress
  • Fleet - Fleets assault facilities or other fleets. They may also act as escorts for larger operations

The real draw comes from the stories such a system generates. Remember that one time you were looking to liberate slaves being transported into the Amarr empire and wound up finding a Sansha operative? How that prompted you and your friends to go poking around, finding a whole nest of them looking to do much the same as you were - in their own special way. Even the Empire offered it's begrudging respect after you tidied that mess up.
