ah... the old "singleton" problem...

when something is in a "stack" it loses all it's "own" attributes and takes on the default attributes of that item (which is why you can't repackage damaged items, they have a hp value that is uniquely theirs). As items are manufacted in stacks you wouldn't be able to store the manufacturing data... they could make the manufacturing output assembled items, but I suspect that would seriously annoy the mass producers.

They might be able to store data about an item once it's been assembled, but as soon as it is repackaged it'll lose all of it.

Curiosity killed the Kata... ... but being immortal he wasn't too worried about keeping a count.

Giving ships some sense of history of their own is an idea I really like. Unfortunately, the way ships can be packaged and assembled at present makes this infeasible.

It could still be done if you considered the lifetime of a ship the time from its assembly to its destruction or repackaging. The log could start at the time it was assembled (and named):

"The Megathron class battleship 'Hello Kitty' launched by Daedalus Arcova in Jita IV - Moon 4 - Caldari Navy Assembly Plant at 16:30 on Monday 14th November, 2011."

Maybe combine that with a subtle but worthwhile modifier that accumulates with use, to boost the ship's vital attributes (a variation of Naomi's suggestion of ship XP). This would make older, 'veteran' ships unique, more valuable, and would finally settle the issue of how to implement ship crews.

I'm also tempted to suggest that it shouldn't be possible to repackage a ship once it's been assembled (maybe with the exception of shuttles). They would remain assembled until destroyed, trashed or reprocessed - in the same way as faction/T2 laser crystals behave once used. It doesn't actually make any sense to be able to 'package' a spaceship to 1/5 of its size anyway.

Newly constructed, unassembled ships could still be bought from the market, and could be moved around by haulers and freighters as easily as they are now.

Sure, it's heavy on the RP, but it adds additional richness to the game that everyone could get something out of.
