Regardless of where this case goes, and whether or not the game actually is full of sociopaths (and I'm more worried about the ones who get elected to office), it's only a matter of time before "some kid kill himself". Sure the game will be involved, and there will never be enough evidence to fully blame it, and the kid him or herself will not be operating on all cylinders to begin with.

But the facts won't be enough to stop first the impression of the "half paying attention" public ( keeping the news on while they do other stuff and are not really paying attention) to go away with the impression "Eve makes kids kill themselves" and there will be politicians - the real sociopaths - doing what sociopaths do best, which is to legislate in such manner that they appear to care about the public so they can get reelected.

Whatever the case, it won't be friendly to the game, the player base, and CCP.

Yeah when some miner goes on a kill crazy rampage, CCP will probably have to remove mining for the game.

Or maybe make people take a test to prove they can handle it or something I guess?

Yeah, cuz we all saw how WOW changed after someone played himself to death .. amiright ? Or murdered over a sold game item ?

If people press 'I accept' on the EULA and terms & conditions and then expect to be safe from the rest of us sociopaths, they clearly did not read what they agreed on.

When I get a call from my bank for example (or even call my bank), I cringe a little because I can't easily verify who's on the other end of the line. The social expectation however is that I should take my chances (doing anything else is a huge pain for everyone involved).

Anyway, just musing. AFAIK the recording isn't illegal (though soundcloud would probably take it down if requested) and a <2hr voluntary conversion is hard to construe as harassment.

But all I wanted to say was the sound cloud could just be argued as defamatory material that had no explicit consent

Or maybe make people take a test to prove they can handle it or something I guess?




When any such rampage occurs, you can tell the real cause of it by what gets blamed the least.

Admittedly a day of mining would have me on a rampage.

It's not just the fact he was a noob; it's the way the guy was completely humiliated with attempts by the scammers to humiliate him even more in front of his small children. Never heard anything so sickening in any game. You guys are F'ing idiots and sociopaths.



There is a reason why the subscription numbers for eve are low compared to other mmo's.
But then thats also the reason why it has been stable for a very long time, its a game with alot of disturbing people playing the game.
However its the only good mmo i know so far where something like this is possible.

So i suppose you are right but you have to be glad it is possible in this game, because eve without the ability to scam people like this and the sandbox it is right now would just make it a very awfull desgined space shooter.

On this case though after listening to it i have to agree with the OP.
The people that scammed him in this way are pretty sad and probably have some real life issues they need to sort out, i at least wouldn't want to know these kind of people.



On the contrary. A majority of the reasons I have seen that people don't play it or don't stick around after they trial if they do it has generally always been either *My character is just a ship!?* or the *Why is this not a sim!!! No joystick!? I thought this was like Freelancer!!* . Those tend to be the top two reasons. The third is the game is too hard. Not harsh, hard as in they can't find there way around and they quit due to lack of imagination. They get stuck on the routine of mining and doing missions and then leave because it's the same crap they did in their other games. As for people getting scammed, that's a lack of common sense. If someone really gets emotionally traumatized playing a game and getting scammed and joked with then I hate to see how they handle real life.

Well, we certainly see the issue from different points of view.

Someone said above that this kind of behavior blurrs the line between game and RL, and I agree. In fact, I've voiced a few times my opnion that EVE will be the first game where a RL crime will be triggered by a ingame action. It has already happen with minor felony.

We don't have two brains, one for "game" and another for "real life". It's only one, and EVE certainly asks a lot of the spurious barrier between playing and living...

Honestly, if you don't have a clear and well-defined line between fantasy and reality, EVE is not a game you should be playing.

In EVE, I'm a New Order Knight ruthlessly hunting down non-compliant miners, blowing their ships apart, detonating their pods, and feasting on the delicious goo inside until the spacepolice appear.

In RL, I'm a nurse practitioner working for a pretty highly esteemed children's hospital, helping kids with leukemia get through chemo treatments.

My EVE antics and behaviours have nil to do with my RL. I don't go to work and injure the kids under my care because I had a bad run in EVE.
