The eager noob then agreed to read a random page out of wikipedia, with plans to spend his 7 billion winnings on gametime. After 5 minutes of reading out the page he was then scammed out of all his assets.

It's not just the fact he was a noob; it's the way the guy was completely humiliated with attempts by the scammers to humiliate him even more in front of his small children. Never heard anything so sickening in any game. You guys are F'ing idiots and sociopaths.



There is a reason why the subscription numbers for eve are low compared to other mmo's.
But then thats also the reason why it has been stable for a very long time, its a game with alot of disturbing people playing the game.
However its the only good mmo i know so far where something like this is possible.

So i suppose you are right but you have to be glad it is possible in this game, because eve without the ability to scam people like this and the sandbox it is right now would just make it a very awfull desgined space shooter.

On this case though after listening to it i have to agree with the OP.
The people that scammed him in this way are pretty sad and probably have some real life issues they need to sort out, i at least wouldn't want to know these kind of people.

Oh and OP if you actually cared about this guy you wouldn't have republished his towering stupidity. You're just using his daftness to further some issue you have with scammers scamming in a game that features scamming.

It's like being mad at boxers for punching each other in the ring.

I'm not assigning motivation, I'm pointing out a good place for a limit. I absolutely agree on the separation of eve and RL, if you sign in and undock you should be ready to have a bad time. But harassment, even in game, can earn you a CCP ban.

It's not about the person who got scammed, you can go and fish out another sob story from a scammed or ganked person.

I just listened to this again. It's pretty funny, this guy first of all tells these guys that he won't sing that song by Garbage because it has language inappropriate for his kids, then just before 1:10 he starts swearing his head off at My Little Pony.

This. Put some kind of punishment in place for previously legal actions, and it becomes a weapon in the hands of whomever whines the loudest.

Here, I will go ahead and give my final word on the matter.

It is an order of magnitude beyond intellectually dishonest to advocate for or attempt to arrange for real world punishments based on your reactions to someone or something in a media that is entirely voluntary to participate in.

If you do believe that you get to legislate your hurt feelings against someone, then as far as I am concerned, you are already damned. Nevermind that, in such a case, your opinion shouldn't count because you are so far from being rational you might as well be freebasing handfuls of Ambien.

So, if you think that the "perpetrator" of this "scam" needs to be punished, or if you are in the "something has to be done!" category of people? Congratulations, you are what is wrong with civilized society.

One shouldn't confuse bullying with sociopathy (as bullies are rarely sociopaths and the defining characteristics of the two are very different).

One should also be careful not to under-value bullying. It's a very important natural process that streamlines social interaction and expectations. I wonder how much decreased productivity in western society can be linked back to anti-bullying campaigns, but I may just be having an old-man reaction to this generation's geeks.

I do have trouble seeing the lesson here though. You might argue the man should be less trusting, but I think his level of trust wasn't unreasonable for real-world interaction. You could argue it's a lesson specific to Eve, but the interaction was more telecommunication based than Eve based.

When I get a call from my bank for example (or even call my bank), I cringe a little because I can't easily verify who's on the other end of the line. The social expectation however is that I should take my chances (doing anything else is a huge pain for everyone involved).

Anyway, just musing. AFAIK the recording isn't illegal (though soundcloud would probably take it down if requested) and a <2hr voluntary conversion is hard to construe as harassment.

Are you new to the internet or just MMOs, or life in general?

Some people in real life are high school bullies as adults.
Some people on the internet are not nice, some people in MMOs are bullies, shockingly, in MMOs that do not involve spaceships.

To imply as the OP does that a small group of people = Eve is about as valid as me saying "All X people are bad because 4 of them did Y to me"


I understand some people think like this. It is easy to blanket everyone, after all, I hear all goons are ebil, all people who violence spaceships are nasty pandas, and all 0.01ers are morons, and all mission runners are whiney carebears.

I also hear everyone on the Eve forums is a psychologist with years of expertise and able to make a diagnosis in a few minutes, handily, everyone is also a lawyer with extensive knowledge of criminal legislation and possibly personal injury no win, no fee experience too. I feel lucky to be part of a game where I can get such expert advice for free, and often unsolicited.

While I am here, do we have any internet doctors, and maybe any internet quantum physicists
