And the title is true too. MTV died for me back in the 90's when they stopped being MTV.

I never really got the chance of knowing MTV when it was actually good, but I know within a few years radios went down the drain as well.

Back in the day my family didn't have cable, but for some reason my dad's little portable tv could pick up MTV so I spent a lot of time watching videos by EMF, Nirvana, The Real McCoy, Right Said Fred, Kriss Kross, etc. During the daytime it really was music all day long. And the shows that they had still pertained to everything music related like MTV news. Even Beavis and Butthead showed 3 songs during each show that they would comment on.

I think most people agree that the downfall started with The Real World. Now the only time I hear about MTV is when crap like this happens.

I think the downfall started with the localized sub-programs.
Before that, there was only MTV US broadcasted around the world- their program was mostly music, because a big part of their target audience couldn't speak English very good, so shows with lots of talking would have no chance in other countries.
With MTV Germany / MTV France / MTV Spain etc suddenly there was a lot of regional music and content, no longer that one program unifying the youth worldwide; with the language barrier gone, cheap and crappy reality TV reared its ugly head for the first time.

Damn, I learned English by watching Beavis and Butthead when I was a kid-....

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Interesting hindsights, very different from local radios here, these were bought by major-owned national radios to expand their coverage with lesser investments, and being the majors pets, they slowly stopped the niche programmings to focus on the mainstream catalogs of the majors, effectively watering down the quality.

I have never understood the purpose of ****** reality shows on a freaking music channel.

I don't have as much of an issue with that yet. Most of the time I just use my iphone as a mp3, but when I don't I stick mostly to The Eagle which is Classic rock or The X which is Grunge rock. Those are like the only 2 channels in my area that don't play country or hip hop/dance.
I can see The X taking a similar route though. It started back in the mid 90's around here as Pirate Radio. It was local, played grunge, and had a horrible reception (rumor had it the guy who set up the station placed the dishes himself. It was later bought by a larger company though they still play mostly alternative. Biggest thing that I noticed years back was that they were going through a variety of morning shows.

I spent some years in boarding schools and used to listen to what radios I could receive, mostly late evening shows since I had to wait after curfew.
From station to station, I could switch between heavy metal to electro and always found interesting stuff. I really miss those days, with stations where it sounded like the guy was mixing tunes in his garage ala Pump up the volume.
It built my teenage, between Nirvana, the early albums of Metallica, Iron Maiden when Bruce Dickinson took over, ACDC or to a completely opposite level, DJs like Hallucinogen,1200 Mics, Infected or Juno.

Nowadays, I let friends push stuff my way and sort through it mostly, like I used to push tape-rips of these shows in high-school. Lol

Mike ...would that radio station be EAGLE FM ?...if it is ..its a damn good radio station ...me and the wife spent two weeks listening to it while on holiday in florida a few years back .
